Farmer hits 1,000

Salem senior puts up 36 for second straight game, reaches milestone at home in fourth quarter; Pennsville’s Brooklyn-born bomber has breakout game in Eagles win

SALEM — Anthony Farmer wanted to get his 1,000th career point Monday night in the worst of ways — and for a lot of reasons.

The game against Penns Grove was at home in front of all his friends, fans and family. And it was against a respected county rival. If he could pull it off, chances are it would have come in another victory to move his Salem basketball team forward and, after weeks of it dangling out there, the chase would finally be over and they all could starting thinking of bigger things.

There are a lot of points in this picture. Salem coach Anthony Farmer (L) has 1700 in high school, 1000 in college. His son, Salem guard Anthony Farmer, got his 1000th point Monday.

But 35 points is a big ask, especially in a rivalry. That’s what he needed coming into the game. Yet he was confident.

The senior guard got his 35 Monday and then some. He maxed out at 36 — for the second game in a row — in the Rams’ 96-52 win.

“I wanted to get it tonight bad,” he said, while his teammates hovered around chanting 1K, 1K as he spoke. “This is a rivalry game. Since my sophomore year these games are big. We always look forward to playing Penns Grove and I really wanted it here at home against them.

“(The milestone) has been on my mind for weeks now, so I’m excited to get it over with and move on with the season. We’ve got a whole lot of season left. I know my dad’s (Rams coach Anthony Farmer) happy to get it out the way. I’m done talking about it. We can move on now.”

Anticipation for the milestone built throughout the second half, especially after Farmer scored 17 in the first half to cut his target in half. It was absolutely tingling after he scored eight straight points for his team across the third and fourth quarters to get the target within single digits.

About the only disappointing part of it all was he got the historic point on a mundane free throw with 7:09 left in the fourth quarter when he was fouled driving to the basket after missing two 3-pointers.

Both teams retreated to mid-court when Farmer went to the line standing at 999, partly out of respect for the player and the moment and partly because there was a technical foul called right after the original foul.

When he drained the first of the free throws — there were four altogether — for points 35 and 1,000, he raised his arms in relief and triumph and the crowd rushed the floor. The mass of humanity eventually carried him into a dogpile in the corner of the gym near the DJ stand. There were T’s for that, too.

“It was just a great moment; one he’ll remember forever,” Coach Farmer said. “And it wasn’t scripted.”

“It happened all so fast,” young Anthony said. “Like snapping your finger, I’m crowded.”

Farmer’s heart still was racing when order was restored and he returned to the line with free throws to take. He’s a good free throw shooter as it is — 78 percent this year — and was working on 11 in a row and 24 of his last 25 at the time of his 1,000th point, but understandably he was short on the second free throw and the first tech.

But he added point 1,001 to complete the sequence and retired for the evening cheering enthusiastically from the bench while the rest of his teammates attempted to break the scoreboard. The Rams had 90 points with three minutes left in the game.

“I’m really happy about it; he deserved it,” said teammate Jabez DeJesus, one of the first to mob him after the milestone point. “I was really excited because I assisted a lot of those points of his. It means a lot. Now his name is going to be on the banner up there so it means a lot to the city, the school. I’m happy for him.”

The milestone might have been on everyone’s mind, but so was the game. The Rams were looking to extend their season winning streak to three games and winning streak against county competition to 12 straight. (Penns Grove was the last county team to beat them, Feb. 16, 2021). Farmer the player admitted he wanted to be “a little more aggressive than usual” because of the circumstances, but everything he did in the high-scoring night was done within the context of the game.

He wasn’t forcing shots. If he were all about getting the points he needed for the milestone he would’ve taken it to the hole both times he made steals at midcourt on the back of that eight-point second-half run. Instead, he fed Xavier McGriff and Tymear Lecator for fast-break layups that extended the Rams’ lead.

“I wasn’t concerned about that,” his father said. “I’ve been telling him if you go out there and you don’t play the right kind of basketball you’re going to sit next to me. The 1,000 will come. We’re trying to string together wins, we’re trying to play the right way of basketball to get ready for next month, to try to make a run in Group I; that’s our goal.

“I didn’t think he’d actually do it tonight, but we realized at halftime he was halfway there, so he went for it.”

Farmer is the 27th player in Salem history to reach the milestone, 17th boy, and first since Gage Ausland in 2020.

And he’s the second player in his house with 1,000. His father and coach, Anthony Farmer, scored more than 1,700 points at St. Augustine as a high schooler and 1,000 at Rutgers.Little Anthony was at the game dad scored his 1000th for Rutgers (against DePaul), so it was only fitting his dad was there when he made it.

“It’s a tremendous honor,” the elder Farmer said. “I don’t know how many duos in South Jersey, father-son, (have done it), let alone I had a chance to coach the kid to his 1,000; it’s really special. It’s a great honor. He gets to go down with some of the greats in the state. I’m proud of the kid.”

PENNSVILLE 68, GATEWAY 46: The Eagles have been waiting for Jayden Thomas, their Brooklyn-born bomber, to have a game like this. The senior put 25 points on the hapless Gators (1-16) to help his team snap a four-game road losing streak.

Thomas had put together three straight double-figure games last week, but his big night Monday beat his previous Pennsville best by eight points. It was a painful night in some respects, however, as he rolled an ankle late in the game and left on crutches.

Pennsville junior Luke Wood, the first Salem County player to reach the 1,000-point mark this season, added to his total with 18 points.

Making the most

Salem County wrestling teams in action all over the state Saturday with mixed results; Efelis, Baptiste have big days for Pennsville

By Al Muskewitz
Riverview Sports News

PENNSVILLE – Maddox Efelis got the word he was going to be in Pennsville’s varsity lineup for a duals match for the first time in his career sometime during the day Friday. It was plenty of time to get ready and enough time not to get nervous.

When it came time to get on the mat, the junior handled things the way Eagles coach John Starcevich would have liked – like he’d been there before. Efelis won both of his matches, one by first-period pin and one by decision, as the Eagles defeated Oakcrest and Overbrook in their Saturday quad.

EFELIS

“I wanted to get out there and not get pinned and help us get some points,” Efelis said. “It felt good to get the wins.”

Efelis got inserted in the lineup after regular 138 Joey Maurer was an injury default in Friday’s night’s match against Buena. It was Efelis’ first time making weight at 138, having previously weighing in at 144.

He had wrestled with the varsity once before this season, at 150 against Gateway in the Blue Devil Duals, and lost in a technical fall. Most of his mat time has been in the wrestling room and with the JVs.

“I was nervous (today), but I tried to keep everything the same that I do to get ready for a match,” he said.

The Eagles beat Oakcrest 40-15 and Overbrook 51-18. They didn’t wrestle Millville in the quad because they already had earlier this season. Robbie McDade (157) had two pins, Trevor Waddington (285) had a pin and a decision, and Travis Hagan (144), Sky Eppes (150) and Connor Ayars (175) all had two wins via pin and forfeit.

It also was a big day for another new wrestler. The Eagles put together some girls matches and Esther Baptiste, a first-year senior wrestler, won her two matches, pinning Kayla Nicholson from Overbrook in 3:37 and taking an 8-4 decision from Jade McDowell from Millville.

She was especially proud of the win over McDowell, which she called one of her most difficult matches of the season, because she twice escaped headlocks that had her in danger. It gave her a 6-4 overall record this year with four pins, 6-2 in matches against girls.

BAPTISTE

“Today opened my eyes to more of what I can do better at offensively and defensively,” she said. “I’m proud of myself because I was really tired when I had to wrestle my last match and I didn’t let her pin me and I won.”

Baptiste’s road to the mat is a lot like another wrestler on the Eagles’ roster. After emigrating to the United States from Guyana in 2018, she came to the wrestling room after moving to Pennsville from Houston last year and talking with 190 standout Elias Lussi about the sport. She showed up with an athletic background and a lot of enthusiasm and has been learning on the fly.

Lussi came to the Eagles wrestling room three years ago after moving from Miami with no understanding of the sport and has become the face of the program. “It was because of him that I really wanted to try it out,” Baptiste said.

Now she’s enjoying the experience so much she’s thinking of joining the program at Rutgers-Newark next year depending on how the rest of this season goes.

PENNS GROVE – Penns Grove went 2-1 in their own duals event, beating St. Joe’s (Hammonton) 54-18 and New Egypt 48-27, and falling to Deptford 60-18.

The Red Devils were set up with multiple forfeits in their St. Joe’s win, but they staged a big rally to take down New Egypt. They lost each of the first five bouts against the Warriors, then won the next eight to secure the win.

Anthony Brown (150) won all three of his matches by pin. Isaiah Upshur went 3-0 with a pin in the Deptford match, a injury default and a forfeit.

PARK RIDGE – The Wolverines went all the way up near the state line with New York to face some stiff North Jersey competition. They went 0-3, but two of their matches went down the wire.

They lost to Emerson/Park Ridge 51-21, Hatchung Hills 39-38 and Hillsborough 36-30.

The match with Hillsborough was close throughout and was tied three times, the last at 30-30 when Brett Rowand pinned Tyler Margelis in under a minute at 150. But Hillsborough scored decisions in each of the final two bouts to pull out the win.

Rowand gave the Wolverines a 38-34 lead over Watching Hills with a decision at 150, but Cody Pritzlaff scored a technical fall (23-7) in the final bout at 157 to snatch the win away.

Paul Banff (190) and Mateo Vinciguerra (285) won all three of their matches by pin for the Wolverines.

PITTSGROVE – Getting to and staying at .500 is one of Schalick basketball’s biggest focuses this season, because there is so much that goes with it, but there was something even more special about getting back there – for the fourth time this season – Friday night.

When the Cougars put away winless Gateway 61-47, it allowed them to eclipse last season’s win total and guaranteed them their winningest season since the 2019-20 season. The four wins match their combined total of the last two years and has them thinking about something they haven’t dare consider since 2018-19 – a berth in the state tournament.

“Going into the game our goal is to always fight to be a .500 team and coming into today we had a chance to go back to that,” Schalick coach James Turner said. “I know that’s important to the kids as well because they know if we can stick to staying being a .500 team we have a good chance of getting into the playoffs. They really wanted that win today.”

The Cougars (4-4) had to work for it. They trailed the Gators (0-12) by two after the first quarter, but they made a defensive adjustment during the break and it produced turnovers and quick transition points that allowed them to pull away.

While all that was going on, Reggie Allen, Nylan Sutton and Dan Lis hit the Cougars’ three 3-pointers and they took a seven-point lead into halftime. The same defensive approach let them to stretch the lead to 13 going into the fourth quarter.

The Cougars know they have to keep winning. The 2019-20 team didn’t make the playoffs with nine wins, but the 2018-19 team did with seven. The last time the program had a winning season was 2015-16 when they were 22-8 and played in the South Jersey Group I final.

“They know that if we want to make the playoffs we have to get wins, so the .500 thing isn’t always the most important thing ,” Turner said. “We had certain things in front of us in the beginning of the season that we knew we had a great chance to be competitive in and the kids know that as well. When we’re playing those games we put more emphasis on winning the ones we’re supposed to be competitive in.”

They’re still looking for that signature win. The four teams they have beaten this season – Salem Tech, Cape May Tech, Pennsauken Tech, Gateway — have a combined record of 4-38. They are currently No. 20 in the South Jersey Group I power points standings, 35 points behind current No. 16 Pennsville.

Sutton led the Cougars with a career-high 20 points. Allen had 19, including nine in the second quarter, and Lis had 11.

Aydan Copestick hit four of the 3s and led three Spartans in double figures with 18 points. Cairee Cooper had 15 and Deyon Rowland had 14.

“They shot the lights out and we couldn’t buy a bucket,” Penns Grove coach Damian Ware said.

Framed for success

Salem Tech girls bowlers go into the new week still glowing from first win in program history

By Al Muskewitz
Riverview Sports News

WOODSTOWN – Matt DiTizio loves it when a plan comes together.

After two years laying the foundation for the bowling program at Salem Tech, DiTizio and assistant coach Mark Kasubinski came into the preseason this year with the priority of building up the girls team.

They were able to put a full boys team together right away, but the girls have been a slow grow. They did have bowlers to put on the lanes, but not enough for a complete five-man lineup. Now, things are starting to “come together” for them and they’re making strides one step at a time.

You might have noticed a little different swagger in the Tech girls as they walked around school this past week.

That’s because they’ve been riding the momentum of the first win in their program’s history, a 3-1 win over Lindenwold last time out at Wood Lanes.

“Thing are starting to come together,” DiTizio said. “They’ve had some close moments. But I don’t think they really fully understand the significance of it. That’s the first one we’ve had of hopefully many wins and they did it. They’ve been learning and improving together and that’s the big step in the right direction as far as I’m concerned.”

The boys team had enjoyed some success – they won four matches last year and are 2-2-2 this season – but the girls, with their limited lineup, had lost 21 straight matches since their inception in 2021-22. They hadn’t won a game until they evened their match with a 532 against Salem in mid-December.

“I think they knew it was coming after that,” DiTizio said.

They split the first two games with Lindenwold – winning the first 531-505 and losing second 634-538 – then won the third game 634-535 and took the overall point 1703-1601.

Lexi Cagle, the Chargers’ lone senior, led the way with the match’s high game – a career-best 177 in Game 3 – and high series (397). She averages 125.4. Naomi Hess and Casey Zaluske both averaged 117 for the match.

It was said they were really excited for the morning announcements the next day at school to hear their results broadcast to their classmates.

“To be truly honest with you, both Coach Matt and myself were actually more head over heels than they were,” said Kasubinski, who oversees the girls team. “They almost took it in stride, very matter of factly. They were obviously excited and happy, especially the new girls, they got a real kick out of it. Coach and I were over the moon about it and we’re like ‘Girls, you just made history,’ and they were like, ‘Yeah, we know. That’s cool.’

“It was very understated, but you could tell all the things that we’ve been preaching at them and telling them – this is going to happen, once you get a full team we’re going to be able to compete, we’re going to win game, we’re going to win matches – (was kicking in). I think they realized all that stuff we’ve been telling them since the preseason is not just lip service. They were obviously very satisfied, very happy to make that accomplishment and be part of history at Salem Tech.”

And now they have a couple tall orders coming up. They go to Hammonton Tuesday and host Clayton at Wood Lanes Thursday. Both opponents are currently 5-1 and they lost to Clayton with only four bowlers earlier this year, but the Chargers go into the matches knowing what winning feels like.

“I think getting a taste of that and seeing that it’s not just a myth that we can go out there and win matches, they’re going to ramp up their expectations for themselves because they know what they’re capable of, they’ve seen what they can accomplish,” Kasubinski said. “To get that first taste of winning a match and knowing when we are at full strength, when we do have a full team, when we do bowl well, we can go out there and go shoulder to shoulder with other teams in our division or in our conference, in the region, and have positive results.

“And I think if they don’t meet those expectations they’re going to be very critical of themselves. Knowing how our young ladies are, they take these things seriously.”

Penns Grove’s Brown finishes second in Maryland tournament; Schalick wins three, Woodstown, Pennsville in duals

By Riverview Sports News

CHESAPEAKE CITY, Md. – Anthony Brown wrestled for a title for the second week in a row and this time finished second to return home as Penns Grove’s highest-placing wrestler in the 27th annual Battle at the Bridge.

Brown lost a 13-6 decision to Ryan Sewell of Harford Tech in the 150 final. It was his first loss of the season. Brown pinned all three of his opponents on the road to the final.

Isaiah Upshur placed third, winning by injury default over Jimmy McLane of team champion Sussex Central in the consolation final. Devine Arce finished fifth at 120, pinning Keegan Allan of North East in 0:46 in the fifth-place match.

Upshur went 4-1 in the tournament with three pins. Arce went 3-2 and all three of his wins were by pin.

Four other Penns Grove wrestlers won at least one match in the tournament – Adam Gonzales (126), Reed Clark (132), Jayden Owens (157) and Clinton Bobo (175).

The Red Devils finished 14th as a team with 82 points.

PENNS GROVE – As almost everybody’s favorite to win the Tri-County Diamond Division and then some in South Jersey, the Woodstown girls basketball team knows it’s going to get everybody’s best shot every night.

The Wolverines faced their biggest test of the young season Thursday night and answered the bell like the favorites they are.

In a battle between the two best teams in the division, Woodstown grabbed the lead late in the first quarter, endured some anxious moments near the end of the first half and then finally pulled away in the second half for a 61-53 victory over Penns Grove.

“This is probably the biggest challenge we’ll have in all of our division games,” Wolverines coach Kara Straughn said. “They’re athletic, they’re quick, they’re the second-best team in our division, but I’ve got 10 girls who play together. There’s nobody in my opinion in our division who has as much of a team as I do.”

While Megan Donelson (25 points) and Talia Battavio (20) did most of their scoring as usual, the Wolverines (5-1) got contributions from throughout the lineup. Shannon Pieman grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked three shots. Alyssa Baber had 10 boards.

And they needed every bit of it. They took the lead midway through the first quarter, but Penns Grove never let them get comfortable.

The Red Devils were out of sorts during their two games in Wildwood after Christmas, but they were determined to play their game and not get caught up in the early-season enormity of the game. They pressed from the jump and made the Wolverines work for everything they got.

Donelson and Battavio combined for all of Woodstown’s points in the first quarter and 28 of their 30 in the first half.

Penns Grove is a team that likes to drive and attack the basket. But as the first half worn on, the Wolverines’ defense kept forcing the Red Devils farther out for shots and it produced the predictable results.

Woodstown led by 12 with less than two minutes left in the first half, but Penns Grove rallied and things got real intense in the final minute of the half. With 25.8 seconds to go in an eight-point game, Penns Grove’s RiNiyah Wilson was fouled by Battavio driving to the basket and the reaction led to a technical foul on the Wolverines guard.

Wilson hit three of the four free throws to make it a five-point game and the Red Devils had the ball with a chance to cut it to two or three. But Gianna Maiorini thwarted those plans when she stole the possession and fed Donelson who banked in a short jumper in the lane with six seconds to go. Donelson then stole the next inbounds pass and the Wolverines ran out the clock to take a seven-point halftime lead.

“If they would’ve gotten the lead I think it would’ve been a different game,” Straughn said.

The Red Devils got to within four several times early in the second half, but the Wolverines pushed it back out to 10 . They kept the Red Devils at arm’s length the rest of the game to win their fifth in a row while sending their hosts to their third straight loss.

“I think we could’ve done a little bit better than what we actually did, but we ended up pulling out the win and that’s just all that matters,” Donelson said.

While Donelson and Battavio were the big producers for Woodstown, Wilson did all she could to keep Penns Grove in it. The transfer from Kingsway led all scorers with a career-high 33 points and she grabbed nine rebounds.

“My coach talks about mental toughness, fight through the game, if we’re down pick my teammates up, keep going, keep fighting,” Wilson said. “I like playing in big games. I like competition.”

PENNSVILLE – The Eagles had the best of it in this battle of teams fighting through injuries. They opened a 24-7 halftime lead, then erupted for 21 points in the third quarter and shut out the Cougars in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles were down to four core players because of the injuries and brought up several players from the junior varsity to replenish the ranks. Veterans and newcomers alike got together for a film session before the start of the night’s JV game to hammer out a game plan for the main event.

They got the bulk of their scoring from Marley Wood (20 points) and Nora Ausland (18) while the others help keep it in the road. Wood and Ausland combined for all of Pennsville’s points in the first half.

“The girls who got pulled up stepped up and played the role we needed them to play,” Pennsville coach Sam Trapp said. “Izzie Saulin really stepped up on the defensive end. She had some great blocks and solid rebounding.”

Pennsville’s Lussi win his first career tournament title at Overbrook; Schalick/Cumberland wins Clipper Classic, Penns Grove’s Brown voted Most Oustanding Wrestler

By Al Muskewitz
Riverview Sports News

PINE HILL – Elias Lussi’s rise from a tagalong who knew next to nothing about the sport when he first walked into the wrestling room to becoming the face of a program moved to another level Thursday when he won his weight division in an in-season tournament for the first time.

The Pennsville senior added “tournament champion” next to his name when he took a 7-2 decision from Timber Creek’s Amir Reason-Dallas, an aggressive returning regional qualifier, to win at 190 in the Overbrook Holiday Tournament.

He’s the first Pennsville wrestler to win an in-season tournament title since Mikey Lapalomento took the 138 title in last year’s Gateway holiday tournament. He also had a bye and two pins on the road to his crown.

“I’m proud; I’m pumped, man,” Lussi said. “This is something I was looking forward to, especially after the Howdy Duncan tournament (in Delaware) where I got sixth. I wanted to bounce back after some tough losses. This was my opportunity to make some noise and prove myself.”

Lussi arrived in the Pennsville wrestling room three years ago at the urging of one of his friends knowing absolutely nothing about the sport and has evolved into a leader in that room and captain of the team.

“It’s all a testament to the time he put in during the season, in the offseason, after practice,” Pennsville coach John Starcevich said. “There have been times he’s stayed after practice and asked me to drill extra. That’s like music to any coach’s ear. I’ll leave the light on for anyone who wants to work.”

Lussi was one of four Eagles to place in the tournament. Travis Hagan finished third at 138. Lucas Thomas (106) and Robbie McDade (157) finished fourth in their weight classes. The Eagles finished seventh as a team. Timber Creek won it.

“Actually, it was a pretty tough day,” Starcevich said. “There were a lot of Region 8 teams there we’ll see come the post-season.

“We’re in the grind of the season here. We are entering January. We have been tested in some sense and we have guys who are really figuring out what it means to be competitive. We need to continue to work hard in the room and get after it.”

Dan Allen Clipper Classic

CLAYTON – The Schalick/Cumberland cooperative won the first team title in the recent memory of either school and Penns Grove’s Anthony Brown was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler as Salem County wrestlers dominated the day.

Schalick/Cumberland won the 10-team event with 158 points. They had 13 wrestlers place, including five weight-division winners and two runner-ups.

Caleb Jenkins (106), Luke Silva (126), Ricky Watt (157) Jake Magonagle (175) and Ronald Piernikoski (215) all won their weight classes.

Brown was one of two Red Devil champions at the tournament. He won the 150 class title that got away from him last year with a dramatic 11-10 double-overtime victory over Eduardo Oliveira of Riverside. He is 7-0 this season. He’s the Red Devils’ first MOW since Tyreke Brown (220) in the 2019 Region 8 Tournament.

Devine Arce pinned his way to his second title of the season, with both coming in less than 30 seconds. He is 8-0 this year at 120.

Getting closer

Penns Grove feels better about its progress after playing better in the second half of loss to Cherokee

By Al Muskewitz

PENNS GROVE – This wasn’t the way Damian Ware wanted to go into Christmas, but he felt a lot better about it the way his Penns Grove basketball team played in the second half Saturday.

The Red Devils played the last game in the county before the holidays and lost to Group IV Cherokee 45-38. It would have been a completely blue Christmas until picked up their game and won the second half.

“We never have moral victories – we always want to get the win,” Ware said. “However, we’re still growing and learning as a team, so we can take this and look at the positives that are going to come out of it like guys coming out of a slump and understanding how hard we have to actually play. We played hard in the second half.

“We’re getting there. If we can bottle up those good positions and play them for 32 minutes, we’re going to be so tough to deal with.”

The snapping out of a slump part belong to Mehki Ballard. He broke out with three 3s, two in the fourth quarter when he scored eight of his team-high 11 points. Ballard hit 59 3s last season, but hadn’t made any in the Red Devils’ first four games this season.

“I just got more comfortable,” he said. “In the first half I had to get comfortable because I was coming off the bench, so when I got in I knew I had to make shots for our team so we could come back and try to win the game.

“We came in here (at halftime) and knew we had to play harder if we wanted to get back into the game or win the game. When we came in (Ware) told us we had to turn it up the second half.”

Ballard’s stroke got a boost after he went through a form shooting drill Friday in which he couldn’t move to a new spot until he had made 10 shots all net.

The game marked the first this season the Red Devils opened the game with the same starters as the game before – because it produced a win. The group gave them an early lead (5-4), but as the half wore on it was evident they needed more scoring. They went with a different five to open the second half and it gave them a spark.

The Red Devils managed only 14 points in the first half and trailed by nine at halftime but it felt like a lot more. The margin was 14 early in the fourth quarter, but they got it back to nine with two minutes to play.

“We’re finding guys who we know are going to play tough, hard, physical and execute,” Ware said. “We found a little something in the second quarter today and we kind of stuck with it. Sometimes we may need a defensive lineup, sometimes we may need an offensive lineup; it’s fluid.”

The Chiefs got most of their points and all of their 3-pointers from Louis Galasso (18) and Judd Holt (16). They combined for 19 points in the first half.

PITTSGROVE – John Whalen saw the future of Schalick girls basketball in the second half of Thursday night’s game and he had to admit it looked pretty good.

The Cougars have a young team, but they played like veterans on this night. They already led by five at halftime, but outscored LEAP Academy 33-15 in the second half to earn their first win of the season 51-28.

“That showed the potential this group has,” Whalen said. “They pretty much are all sophomores. They’re very young so I think that highlights the potential this team can have.”

Their 33 second-half points were more than the Cougars (1-2) had scored in their first two games of the season combined.

“The talk at halftime was just picking up some aggression and communication on defense and looking to get the ball inside on offense,” Whalen said. “We came out the second half and the girls did an excellent job jumping passing lanes, getting a lot of steals, some fast-break layups. We started to transition a lot more, get the ball up the floor, and find Ava (Scurry) and Cianna (Gaines) inside for some layups.”

Scully and Cali Fisler shared team scoring honors with 14 points each. Scully scored 10 of her points in the second half and Fisler had nine. Carly Vicente had 13.

“The future is bright,” Whalen said. “I think if the girls stick with it … the next couple years down the road could be where we are back to our competitive years where we have been in the past.”

WOODSTOWN 57, CLEARVIEW 54: Talia Battavio hit two free throws with less than five seconds left on the clock to seal the Wolverines’ second straight victory in a game that had more ups and downs than an elevator.

The Wolverines trailed by 10 at halftime, but opened the third quarter with a 16-0 run and took a nine-point lead into the fourth. The Pioneers rallied to tie the game at 50, but the Wolverines made the last push.

Leading scorers Battavio (26 points) and Megan Donelson (20) both hit field goals to move the Red Devils out front and then they hit three of four free throws to lock it down.

Shannon Pierman kept the ball alive with an offensive rebound on the missed free throw with five seconds left and the Wolverines up by a point. The ball got to Battavio, who was fouled and went to the line for the free throws that sealed the game.
