Shorthanded Schalick falls short in challenging powerhouse Paulsboro in South Jersey Group I wrestling finals

PAULSBORO – When you’re already the underdog and facing a program that practically owns the championship trophy, it helps to have all your weapons.

Schalick was “shocking the world” getting to the sectional final for the first time in school history Thursday. But the Cougars didn’t go in with all their bullets and as hard as they tried to make a stand they fell to Paulsboro in the South Jersey Group I championship match 56-17.

It was the Red Raiders’ 45th sectional wrestling title.

“A lot of things had to happen our way,” Schalick coach Joe Frassenei said. “Everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong. I’m happy we scored 17 points.”

The Cougars (24-2) set a school record for wins in getting to the finals, but they went into the match without three 20-win wrestlers. They already knew they’d be without 165 Eric Sulik – he broke his nose in last week’s Pennsauken match — but the absences of E’Shion Underwood (120) and Koen Martin (144) were a more recent development they declined to talk about.

It caused Frassenei to get creative with his lineup, tinkering with it all the way up to match time. He already had second-year wrestler and JV undefeated Dezy Purnell in at 165, but dropped Caleb Jenkins from 113 into the leadoff match at 120 right before the call to the mat and plugged Jacob Potts in a 144. All three were pinned.

“We couldn’t make any moves,” Frassenei said. “We had to go strength on strength and their strength was a little bit better.

“Like at 150, I probably would have bumped around, created more opportunities for us, but when you don’t have the checkers to play with, you don’t have the checkers to play with.”

Athena Eberl even volunteered to wrestle at 120 to give the Cougars some flexibility, but if she weighed in at 120 she wouldn’t be able to compete in her regular weight class in the girls regionals, where she is expected to be a contender.

“We have that kind of team,” Frassenei said. “They just want to step up and fill the gap. That’s the kind of kids these are. They are willing to step in.”

The Cougars got behind early and couldn’t get catch up. Paulsboro won the first two bouts with a pin and tech fall to go out 11-0.

Ryan Miller got the Cougars on the board with a second-period pin a 132, but Paulsboro won the next five bouts to stand on the verge of clinching. One of the key results in the run was Kyaire Harvey’s 12-6 decision over Ayden Jenkins at 150. It was a tight bout throughout, but Harvey scored a takedown with 15 seconds left in the third period followed by a near fall to win.

Schalick now had no margin for error. Ricky Watt and Evan Elliot kept the Cougars alive. Watt remained undefeated on the season with a tech fall at 175 and Elliott followed with a pin at 190.

“It’s always winnable so, I went out there (and) I did my best,” Elliott said. “I did everything I needed to do. It was tough going out there knowing it was going to be hard to win but I trusted my teammates and whatever happens happens.”

“I just wanted to try to bring the score back as much as I could,” Watt said. “If I could go out there and get a pin, that’s what I wanted to do. That’s all you really can do is go out and do your part. You can’t really control what your teammates do, you just want to go out and do as much as you can to help your team.”

Their wins, however, just delayed the inevitable. Frank Damminger scored an 8-5 decision over Gerardo Felipe at 215 to clinch the match. The Red Raiders also won at 285 to extend the lead and Schalick forfeited the last two weight classes.

The Cougars were disappointed they couldn’t go farther, but 157 Riley Papiano probably had the best perspective of the night. He said it might have been a loss on the scoreboard, but it was a win in the history of the school and its wrestling program.

“We’re tenth graders, the majority of this team is ninth and tenth graders, we had 10 guys in ninth and tenth grade who started for us,” Frassenei said. “We’re young. We don’t have seven seniors like they do. Audubon (who they beat in the semis) has seven or eight. We plan on being back.”

AUDUBON – Riley Papiano has never felt so happy to be dropped on his head before.

Papiano painfully won his match at 157 in the South Jersey Group 1 wrestling semifinals Monday night when Audubon’s Pedro Marte was disqualified for slamming the Schalick senior to the mat.

As much as it hurt in the moment, Papiano knew what it meant. The win clinched the Cougars’ 36-31 victory over the No. 1 seed sending them to the sectional final for the first time in school history.

“It was a great night,” Papiano said. “I think it was amazing for the team, the school, everybody.

“I don’t think anybody counted on us getting this far. All the newspapers were going against us and I think we’re just shocking the world. We’re showing everybody else wrong that we can compete at a higher level than anybody else thinks we can.”

The school-record setting win sends the once-beaten Cougars (24-1) to Paulsboro Wednesday – weather permitting – to face the perennial power Red Raiders for a spot in the state final four.

“I don’t think anyone thought we had a shot,” Schalick coach Joe Frassenei said. “Everyone was like, you don’t wrestle a good enough schedule. They weren’t afraid of the big situation. They just wrestled them like they were another opponent and went out and did a great job.

“I told my assistant it was like disbelief (when they clinched). We knew we had a shot, but then reality set in that we actually are going to the South Jersey final for the first time in school history.”

The Cougars had a lot of work to do to get there. Ricky Watt (175) and Evan Elliott (190) “really set the tone for the whole night” with a pin and decision in the first two weight classes to get them rolling.

The Green Wave (22-5) won the next four bouts to go up 20-9. The Cougars stormed back to retake the lead 24-20 on wins from E’Shion Underwood, Luke Silva and Ryan Miller, but Audubon took it right back on Tyler Perozzi’s tech fall at 138 to set up the end game.

Koen Martin (144) and Ayden Jenkins (150) won tight decisions to set up the Papiano-Marte match. If Marte won, the match would go down to the final bout. If Papiano won, it was over.

“I was more proud of the team (than his win),” said Papiano, who’s headed to Norwich (Vt.) University to play football. “It was a team win tonight, it wasn’t an individual. It wouldn’t have been a clinch if Ricky Watt didn’t pin in the first and Ayden Jenkins did get that tough match or Koen didn’t squeeze by and all these other matches, it wouldn’t have mattered.

“As a team I think we embrace (the underdog role) fully. We know no one believes in us and we know every time we win it just makes everybody else more mad.”

If the Cougars are able to pull it off Wednesday, Papiano said, “it would mean the world” to him. He also was part of the Schalick football team that played for South Jersey Group I title in the final.

“Two sectional final games in one year for me is amazing,” he said. “I’d love to win one.”

The Cougars got to Audubon by beating Haddon Twp. in the quarterfinals 44-36. They opened a 44-0 lead, then forfeited the last six weight classes.

Paulsboro got through its half of the bracket by beating Pitman 45-24 and Woodstown 38-37. Sawyer Cabanas pinned Thomas Lacy in 21 seconds at 157 to give Paulsboro a 13-point lead in the Woodstown match and the Red Raiders forfeited the last two weight classes to bring the final margin.

Woodstown took out Pennsville 61-16 in its first-round match.

SALEM – Even though his team was facing an opponent that had 19 wins and was fourth in South Jersey Group 3, Salem basketball coach Anthony Farmer believed it was a winnable game if the Rams brought the right energy.

But even with a Senior Day celebration to add some more juice, the Rams were flat and lost to Absegami 56-43.

The Braves are now 20-3 with a 12-game winning streak.

“I wish I had some answers for you, but the whole game it was energy and effort,” Farmer said. “This was considered a big one for us, we needed this one (and) thought it was a winnable opportunity for us if we played with the right spirit. We just didn’t have the spirit. We didn’t have the energy, effort that we needed.

“You expect the guys to come out and play with some spirit, play with some energy and effort and fly around and we just didn’t have that today. We were flat.”

The big downer was the third quarter. The Rams (9-11) were held to one late field goal and outscored 18-3.

It was a tight game early with the teams trading baskets through 7-7. The Braves started exerting its game-long dominance in the paint and opened an 18-8 lead, but the Rams buried three straight 3s by Tymear Lecator and Xavier McGriff to climb back in it.

It was a four-point game when Absegami coach John Arcidiacono called time with 2:43 left in the first half after Jermyis Burroughs’ 3-pointer gave the Braves a 23-19 lead and then then they really went to work.

They gave up a bucket to Neziah Spence that made it 24-21 then didn’t allow another bucket until Azhone Burden’s running hook with 2:08 left in the third quarter. It was the Rams’ only basket of the third quarter.

“It’s a (close) game at halftime, you’ve got to come out, make a shot or two, get some stops and the game could change just like that,” Farmer said. “Obviously, a three-point quarter, things didn’t go our way … We just need to be better. We need to be able to use energy or we’ll be out (of the playoffs) early.”

The Rams recognized their two seniors before the game and both scored in the game. Burden scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. Joe Tunis scored a bucket in the fourth quarter.

The game also marked the return of Darrelle Johnson. The junior guard had to sit out since Jan. 13 when the NJSIAA declared him ineligible for a violation of its transfer rules and stripped the Rams of four wins that interrupted Farmer’s run towards 100 career victories.

Clinch the crown

Schalick wins three matches on cutoff day to win first division title in 12 years, Woodstown scores big win over Manasquan, and more

By Riverview Sports News

LINDENWOLD — Schalick wrestling coach Joe Frassenei expected to have continued success when his program split its co-op with Cumberland this season, but he didn’t necessarily expect this kind of success this soon.

The Cougars easily defeated three more teams Saturday in the Lindenwold Quad Meet and when they routed Salem they clinched the Tri-County Conference Classic Division title and their first division crown since 2013.

The Cougars routed Salem 77-6 to complete an undefeated division slate. They also beat Lindenwold 68-11 and Palmyra 79-0. It left them 22-1 at the state cutoff date and a solid No. 4 in the South Jersey Group I power points standings and would probably be higher if they played a stronger schedule.

“We’re pleasantly surprised,” Frassenei said. “We knew we were going to be OK. I did not expect us to be this good this quick. I think we’re a year ahead of where I thought we were going to be. I figured we were going to take a step back a little bit this year because we lost half our team, but actually we’ve done much better than I thought we would.”

When the program split, the Cougars maintained 10 of the weight classes with “their” wrestlers. The four slots they had to fill have done well in their own right.

Gerardo Felipe (215) is 20-6, Collin Bittle (138) is 9-3, Caleb Jenkins is 29-1 moving up to 113 from 106 with his only loss a decision to a former co-op teammate, and Emma Cain (106) is 11-1 but inow focusing on the girls regionals.

Only a handful of Cougars got to wrestle three matches Saturday and many of their bouts were forfeited. Among those who wrestled more than once, Ryan Miller (132) had a tech fall and a pin, Bittle (138) had a major decision and two pins, Eric Sulik (165) had three pins and undefeated Ricky Watt (175) had two tech falls.

“It’s been a satisfying season,” Frassenei said. “The kids have been fantastic, they bought into it and they’re young, so we’re going to have all these kids back next year. Hopefully we can build upon that.”

It’s his time

Sophomore point guard Robbins directs second-half comeback that lifts Penns Grove over Woodstown; roundup includes Wednesday’s wrestling and track results

PENNS GROVE – Winning Time is B.J. Robbins’ time.

Whenever the Penns Grove basketball team gets to the point in a game when it’s time to seal the deal, the Red Devils usually put the ball in Robbins’ hands and let him do his thing. And that’s handle the ball, direct the offense and keep them sharp.

The sophomore did his thing flawlessly in the last quarter and a half Wednesday and helped the Red Devils rally to beat Woodstown 70-56.

It extended their season-best winning streak to three games and elevated them to a first-round host position in the current South Jersey Group I power points standings despite a 5-7 record.

“I told Brandin when it’s winning time you are the guy who is going to control the game and that’s kind of what he did at the end of the game,” Red Devils coach Damian Ware said. “He controlled the game, dribbled the ball out, made some great passes to his teammates for assists and we got the easy layups out of it.”

Winning time as defined by Ware is the fourth quarter when the Red Devils are ahead and looking to put the game away, but Robbins got a jump on it in the third quarter when the Red Devils needed somebody to lead the charge back.

Woodstown (7-4) opened the second half with a 12-3 run that threatened to break the game open. But the Red Devils weren’t worried because in the time out Ware called there to settle things down he reminded his players three of the baskets were run-out layups because they were over-pressuring the ball and it allowed the Wolverines to leak out.

The other two buckets in the run were 3-pointers by Alejandro Vasquez, who wrapped the Wolverines’ first eight points of the half around a 3 by Robbins.

If the Red Devils just tightened that up and cut out the offensive rebounds, Ware told them, those things wouldn’t happen and they would wind up winning by double digits. That’s exactly what happened.

The Red Devils (5-7) came out of the time out, did the things Ware reminded them of, and went on a 20-6 run to a feisty end of the quarter to take the lead. At least three times in the run Robbins dazzled the defenders trying to trap him at midcourt with a dazzling display of dribbling before zipping off a sharp pass down low to Jameel Horace who put them up and in.

“I just trusted my teammates,” Robbins said. “I knew they believed in me.”

“The main thing with Brandin is playing aggressive and getting him downhill,” Ware said. “We’ve been working with him all season to be more aggressive. I actually took him out the lineup a couple times, worked him in and out, because he wasn’t giving me what I needed. We had a couple conversation and I told him what we needed and he said ‘I’m ready coach. I got it.’ Ever since then he’s kind of taken the mantle of being more aggressive.”

Robbins finished with 13 points and six assists against the Wolverines. In his last two games he has scored 24 points and dished 14 assists. Roman Gipson led Penns Grove with 19, 13 in the second half. Karon Ceaser had 17. Ceaser is averaging 17.7 ppg during the winning streak and 17 in his last four games.

“He controlled it,” Woodstown coach Ramon Roots said of Robbins. “He just controlled it throughout the whole game and in the second half, like good coaches do, they put it in their point guard’s hands.

“He’s definitely a tough player. He’s a floor general. We tried to bother him the best way we could, but he didn’t really turn the ball over down the stretch. He did a very good job controlling the game and controlling the ball. That’s why I preach to my guys we just can’t turn over the ball (and) put ourselves in a hole.”

Rocco String led Woodstown with 18 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots. Vasquez finished with a career-high 16. He’s averaging 12.5 ppg over his last four games.

“He’s been shooting it well, shooting it with confidence,” Roots said of Vasquez.
