SALEM – Pop Jackson is a man on the move. The multi-sport Salem athlete sat down with Riverview Sports News for a deep dive into all the things that drive him, but he had a schedule to keep. New Rams football coach Kemp Carr cautioned the junior only had 15 minutes before he needed to be in a peer counseling session for younger teammates for which he is a teacher-appointed mentor.
JACKSON
So his time was limited, but Jackson still answered all the questions with the focus he exhibits seeking the best route for a big gain when he runs the football.
But don’t pigeonhole him as just a running back – or a defensive player, for that matter. Carr is quick to call him a “football player,” a nod to Jackson’s versatility as a player and his own present noncommittal to the role the rising senior will play on his team this coming fall.
Before Jackson burst on the scene as a running back to build an offense around last fall he burst on the scene as a track athlete, excelling in the long and triple jump.
During his “15 minutes of fame,” Jackson talked about how he got his nickname, what rushing for 1,200 yards last year meant to him and his goals in both track and football going forward.
And then he was off. You know, a man on the move. – Al Muskewitz
RIVERVIEW SPORTS NEWS: How did you come to be called Pop?
POP JACKSON: I’ve always been Pop since I grew up. I don’t know how it came about, but ever since I was little they called me Pop-Pop and then it just changed to Pop.
RSN: What did being a 1,000-yard rusher mean to you last year? You had 1,245 yards (1,090 of it in the final six games), Salem’s first 1,000-yard rusher in six years (Zaire Jones).
POP: I felt as though I could accomplish more. It felt good to rush for 1,000, but I’m just trying to elevate and get 2,000 this year.
RSN: It started late to you, like the fifth game of the year at Rutgers. What was the change that turned you into that guy?
POP: If nobody else is going to be the guy, I’ve got to be the guy. And when I’m running the ball I felt as though nobody wanted to tackle me. I’m about to start toting the ball.
RSN: Coach Carr is going to be your third head coach in three years. What’s that like for a player to keep going through change like that?
POP: To learn from him and learn from different coaches and how they coach it feels good because in college you don’t know what coach you might run into and what offense and defense you’ll play. It’s a good thing.
RSN: Can you tell yet how the change has impacted you? What do you like about Coach Carr and what do you think his plans are for you?
POP: Since he got here, I’m not going to lie, I’ve been more serious. He doesn’t let any of the guys slip up. It’s needed, so they’re not disrespecting themselves, their family and the team as a whole.
RSN: What are your personal goals for track and football going forward. I know you want to win games and go to the playoffs, but what do you want to get down in this important year?
POP: I want to get more recognized, rushing for a lot of yards and defense. Anything I can get recognized for will be a good thing.
RSN: What do you do when you’re not playing or practicing. Tell me something you do outside of sports?
POP: I just like being in my house. I don’t like going places a lot, but when I go places I like to walk my dog. Other than that, I just stay in the house watching YouTube and stuff. I need to recoup.
RSN: What is something you wish you could do again?
POP: I would have started football earlier. It would have given me more experience and I would have been way better than what I am now.
RSN: Are you an offensive guy or a defensive guy who found his place on offense?
It’s at this point, Carr interjected, “Football player, Pop.” Later in the conversation, after Jackson had left the room, Carr reserved commenting on his plans for the player this coming season.
CARR: I don’t know what I have. I know of what they did. I know some of the guys who are returning who play. I think quality coaches build their structure, their philosophies, their missions, their identity and what they’re trying to do according to your personnel then just trying to get the personnel to fit your identity.
That’s where guys get run into it. They get so accustomed to running one thing, but they don’t have the unit to run it and then they wonder why they pitfall. We know we’ve got a piece, but we need more than a piece. It’s a team sport. We’ve got 45 guys and all 45 play an intricate part of what we’re doing.
Are we going to be a team that has to get the ball out of the quarterback’s hand fast? Are we going to be a team that can hold onto it and do some play action? Is he going to be a decoy at times? Are we going to give him 30 touches? We don’t know that yet. I’ll identify that later down the road.
I knew Pop when he was a sophomore. I saw him play, not running the ball but just as an athlete. He was thrown to the wolves early as a freshman and he held his own. Made some plays. I just think that’s just going to get better for him. As he gets stronger, bigger, faster, more knowledgeable of what his assignments are, the dynamic only gets better for him. Not only that, it’s going to be a turnaround this year and I think he has a lot to do with it. He’s a catalyst of what we’re trying to do … You’re going to need to know where he is on the field at all times. He’s one of those guys.
RSN: Before you burst on the scene as a football player, you burst on the scene as a track guy. What do you like about running track?
POP: I’m on a team and we’re all competing together, but there are individual things you can do. It’s you versus this person, you versus this person. If I don’t do this, I lose because of myself, not because of someone else. If I don’t get it done, I’m mad at myself.
RSN: What’s the longest you stayed mad?
POP: I think a month. After losing the championship to Woodbury (in the 2022 Group I semifinals). We were the better team, but that’s in the past.
RSN: Last year you won the triple jump at the state meet and now you’re looking to win gold in the long jump, too. What’s the factor that’s held it back?
POP: Getting my mark down. I know my steps, my numbers, but when I’m approaching the runway and the board, I’m just passing the board and getting fouls. Then I get to thinking about it instead of just running and giving it my all.
RSN: What does your recruiting look like?
POP: I’ve been getting letters and things, but the top one (for track) is Liberty. For football, there’s Monmouth, Wagner and a couple others (to which Carr added, “but that’s all about to change.”)
I’m a hard working person. I would love to run for any college.
WOODSTOWN 10, CLAYTON 4: The meat of Woodstown’s lineup – Andrew Pedrick, Jack Knorr and Brent Williams – had two hits apiece and combined for seven RBIs as the Wolverines (2-2) got back on the winning track. Pedrick had two singles, two RBIs and three stolen bases. Knorr had a single, double and two RBIs. Williams had two doubles and three RBIs. Three Woodstown pitchers allowed five hits and struck out 11.
HAMMONTON 10, SCHALICK 0: Jaiden Franchetti scattered three hits over five innings and struck out six in shutting out the Cougars (1-3). Luke Pokrovsky (double), Joseph-Tyler Fleming (single) and Ricky Watt (single) had Schalick’s three hits.
Jaxon Miller and Brayden Markart swung the big bats for Hammonton (1-1). Miller had two doubles and five RBIs, while Markart doubled three times and drove in two.
Softball
DELSEA 3, PENNSVILLE 2: Zoey Shangle delivered Delsea’s third straight single to open the eighth inning and drove home the winning run. The Crusaders (2-1) scored the tying run in the seventh on an error in the outfield.
Pennsville (3-2) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on Bella Farina’s RBI double and Bella Rappa’s sacrifice fly. Farina had two doubles in the game and Mary-Louise Montagna had three hits.

In their opening-game victory, Ricky Watt and Luke Pokrovsky both hit a pair of doubles and combined for seven RBIs and two pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the Cougars beat Clayton.
Seven of the Cougars’ 14 hits in the game were doubles. Every spot in the lineup had at least one hit. WOODSTOWN – Sarah Seiden is living one of the more interesting and completely by-the-book experiences afforded New Jersey high school athletes. She’s a two-sport standout competing for two different schools.
SEIDEN
She goes to Salem Tech year-round because of the academic program and runs cross country for it in the fall. But in the winter and spring months, because the Chargers don’t offer the sport, she makes the 3.2-mile drive up Route 45 after school to run indoor and outdoor track for her sending school, Woodstown. She’s set school records for both.
On top of all that, she’s taking college classes at Salem CC that will allow her to get a college degree before she even graduates high school.
The junior sat down with Riverview Sports News at the Woodstown Diner on a rainy Tuesday afternoon before practice to talk about the unique experience, what it means for her schedule, friendships and wardrobe, and her hopes for the season ahead.
The Wolverines hit the track for the first time this season Thursday – weather permitting.
RIVERVIEW SPORTS NEWS: I’m really intrigued about this two-school thing. Explain why you go to Salem Tech and get to compete for Woodstown? It sounds like it presents some interesting logistical challenges.
SARAH SEIDEN: I was really intrigued about Vo Tech’s programs. I’m in the medical academy with it. Their college classes really hooked me in because I’m able to get my associate’s degree before I graduate and I’m enrolled as a student at SCC, which is really cool.
They have a different way of doing it (at Woodstown). They do AP classes where classes at my school are just college classes. My chemistry class counts for my high school credits and my college credits, which is really cool. So, I do that both at once. I really like that.
We don’t have a track at VoTech. We also don’t have baseball fields and stuff, so if you want to play a sport that they don’t offer then you go back to your sending district and can play there, which is great for me because I have all my friends at Woodstown and I love playing with them and I’ve also known the coaches there for years, so I was really happy I was able to do that.
This year was my first year running cross country for (Salem Tech). I never ran cross country before this year and that was really cool to do. Woodstown does have a cross country team, but since my school offers it (you have to compete there). You can’t pick and choose.
It does get confusing sometimes because I have two separate MileSplits, so my times for different schools were not in the same place so I was worried that recruitment and stuff would be harder for me because my times are in different places. But we were able to find a way to mesh them.
RSN: Your closets must be full of stuff. Do you have a bunch of Woodstown orange and a bunch of VoTech navy blue?
SS: I do. My closet is filled to the brim. I definitely have a lot more Woodstown orange and blue than I do my own school.
RSN: Do you have to make sure you’re wearing the right stuff where you are and have you ever worn something from one to the other?
SS: Never by accident, but sometimes I’ll just show up to my school and cross country meets with all this Woodstown gear on because that’s just what I had. I have all this athletic wear and track suits from Woodstown so I’ll just wear that to those meets.
RSN: Do you get weird looks when you’re in class wearing Woodstown stuff knowing you have to practice VoTech cross country in the afternoon?
SS: Yeah, they kind of give me some crap about that, but it’s all fun.
RSN: Are there any others like you there?
SS: No other person on my cross country team is sending district from Woodstown who runs track for Woodstown, but there’s one senior, Abby Melle, who is like me and goes to VoTech but runs track for Woodstown; she also swims.
A bunch of my classmates do all their own sports, but go to the different schools. My friend does wrestling and softball for Pennsville; she comes in with all her Pennsville gear.
RSN: So are you a VoTech kid, a Woodstown kid and what’s your diploma going to say when you graduate?
SS: (Laughing) It depends on the day. I used to have some regrets about going to VoTech because it’s not a traditional high school. Sometimes there’s a bit of a difference between them, but at the end of the day it’s all my friends there and it’s all fun.
RSN: What’s it like emotionally when you compete against your Woodstown friends in cross country?
SS: My old (track) coach, Steve New, was/is the cross country coach for Woodstown and I didn’t run for them, I run for (Kimberly) Kraky who is now our (Woodstown) track coach, which I was very excited about. He (New) had all this fun with it. He would call me traitor, get out of here, because I wasn’t his kid for that. We were always trying to beat each other and that fueled us a lot.
RSN: On the track you run the 400 and 800, set school records in both relays and now you’re embracing the 400 hurdles. What is it you like about all these events and how has your development in the hurdles been going?
SS: Track was my only running sport; I’ve done that since freshman to now. Cross country is very new for me. I always thought of myself as mid-distance/sprinter and I did cross country so I could stay in shape. I didn’t know if I would like it or not, then I kind of realized this could be my thing, too. That kind of shifted all my coaches’ gears to try to find where they want to put me to best benefit myself and the team. I think this year I’m mainly staying in that mid-distance area.
(The hurdles) is just such a fun race for me. I love the 400 hurdles. I’ve been told I have the build for it because I have long legs. It looked fun to me from afar and I really wanted to try it. I asked my coach one day to try it and he didn’t want to let me at first because I had already established my races, but he finally let me one day and it was so much fun and I had such a good time with it and I ended up doing pretty OK with it.
RSN: What do you do away from competition? How to you decompress?
SS: I just love hanging out with my friends and my boyfriend, (Salem Tech basketball player and cross country runner) Tyler Zampino. He pushed me a lot during the season and that was another thing that kept me going. We’re very competitive with each other. I’ve just got to beat him. I will get one under my belt.
I love traveling. For state outdoor last year we got to stay at a hotel and that was so much fun. We stayed overnight and we went out to dinner the night before and it was just so much. It was just a great time.
RSN: What are your hopes and expectations for yourself and the team this season?
SS: I’m really excited to see the dynamic with our new coach. I loved her in cross country and I love her now for a track coach. I think she’s going to be a good asset to the team.
I really am excited to continue with the 400 hurdles and just improving my times. Indoor season I mainly focused on the 400 because our 4×4 team went to the Meet of Champions. I’ve been doing that race for the longest time, so I want to get my time down and PR for that.
The 800 (that broke the Woodbury Relays record last spring and won this year’s Group I indoor title) should be pretty cool, too. Katie Deal graduated so we don’t have her anymore and she was a big part of both those races, but we think we’re still going to be pretty good and solid with (returnees Kayla Ayars, Seiden and Arie Still) and we can keep working and improving our times and we can still be in that same good place.
RSN: Do you have an idea where you want to go for college and will running be a part of it?
SS: Now is definitely the time I should be researching more than I am. I think I’m just trying to learn about all types of college to see where I want to go and see what interests me. I do want to run in college.

Schalick’s Hadfield, Woodstown’s 4X400 relay team compete in the NJSIAA Indoor Track Meet of Champions
By Riverview Sports News
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Schalick’s Jordan Hadfield finished 19th in both the girls 1600 and 3200 meter races Sunday at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Facility.
Hadfield ran the 1600 in 5:13.56 and the 3200 in 11:41.17. She was eighth in both heats of her two races.
Woodstown’s girls 4X400 relay team of Jaime Deal, Kayla Ayars, Sarah Seiden and Arie Still also competed at the meet, which drew the top three finishers in each event across all classifications at the state championship. They finished 24th overall at 4:16.96, which was still six seconds faster than their time in the state meet. They were third in their heat.
