SALEM – Even though his team was facing an opponent that had 19 wins and was fourth in South Jersey Group 3, Salem basketball coach Anthony Farmer believed it was a winnable game if the Rams brought the right energy.

But even with a Senior Day celebration to add some more juice, the Rams were flat and lost to Absegami 56-43.

The Braves are now 20-3 with a 12-game winning streak.

“I wish I had some answers for you, but the whole game it was energy and effort,” Farmer said. “This was considered a big one for us, we needed this one (and) thought it was a winnable opportunity for us if we played with the right spirit. We just didn’t have the spirit. We didn’t have the energy, effort that we needed.

“You expect the guys to come out and play with some spirit, play with some energy and effort and fly around and we just didn’t have that today. We were flat.”

The big downer was the third quarter. The Rams (9-11) were held to one late field goal and outscored 18-3.

It was a tight game early with the teams trading baskets through 7-7. The Braves started exerting its game-long dominance in the paint and opened an 18-8 lead, but the Rams buried three straight 3s by Tymear Lecator and Xavier McGriff to climb back in it.

It was a four-point game when Absegami coach John Arcidiacono called time with 2:43 left in the first half after Jermyis Burroughs’ 3-pointer gave the Braves a 23-19 lead and then then they really went to work.

They gave up a bucket to Neziah Spence that made it 24-21 then didn’t allow another bucket until Azhone Burden’s running hook with 2:08 left in the third quarter. It was the Rams’ only basket of the third quarter.

“It’s a (close) game at halftime, you’ve got to come out, make a shot or two, get some stops and the game could change just like that,” Farmer said. “Obviously, a three-point quarter, things didn’t go our way … We just need to be better. We need to be able to use energy or we’ll be out (of the playoffs) early.”

The Rams recognized their two seniors before the game and both scored in the game. Burden scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. Joe Tunis scored a bucket in the fourth quarter.

The game also marked the return of Darrelle Johnson. The junior guard had to sit out since Jan. 13 when the NJSIAA declared him ineligible for a violation of its transfer rules and stripped the Rams of four wins that interrupted Farmer’s run towards 100 career victories.

So grand

Pennsville’s Marley Wood joins her sister, brother on Pennsville’s list of 1,000-point scorers

FRIDAY GIRLS BASKETBALL
Pennsville 71, Millville 33
Buena at Salem

PENNSVILLE — Every day for the last three years whenever Marley Wood would walk into Pennsville’s gym for PE her eyes would instinctively move to the banner behind the basket recognizing the Eagles’ 1,000-point career scorers.

Every day, the last name on the banner would provide a source of motivation and inspiration.

It was the name of her sister, Ryane. From the first time she saw it hanging up there, she wanted to be on that banner, too.

Now, she will be.

The Eagles’ junior guard became the latest member of the elite club Friday when she scored her 1,000th point — and then some — in their 71-33 rout of Millville.

“I was just so relieved because it’s been my goal since I was little,” Wood said. “The day they put on my sister’s name I’m pretty sure I was here and I was just really excited to be able to see my brother and me right after her so that whoever walks in here will just know that basketball is such a big part of our lives.”

There was a lot of symmetry in the way it happened. Wood swished a 3-pointer from the left corner with 3:33 left in the first quarter to become the third member of her family to reach the magic number. Brother Luke (1,198) did it last year. Ryane (1,224) did it three years ago.

She also became the third player in Salem County to reach the milestone this season, following teammate Nora Ausland and Penns Grove’s RaNyiah Wilson.

“Wow, threes are wild,” Pennsville coach Steve Merritt said.

Ryane Wood walks out with the family to present her sister Marley (4) a banner to commemorate joining the 1,000-Point Club. Ryane and brother Luke (background) are also members of the club.

Wood probably could have done it Thursday in a similarly one-sided game with Schalick, but she didn’t want to steal the thunder from the seniors on Senior Night and scored just enough to leave the target within single digits. And by delaying it a day it gave more family and friends a chance to be there.

In addition to local friends and family who made it to the gym, sister Callie came all the way up from Virginia Tech to witness and celebrate the feat.

The game originally was scheduled as Millville’s Senior Night, but the Thunderbolts agreed to play it here and reposition its gala out of respect for the milestone. The Eagles’ next opportunity at home would have been Monday against Penns Grove, a game that now seems threatened by predicted bad weather.

“She looked so much more comfortable out there today than she was yesterday,” Merritt said. “Yesterday she was unselfish and passing the ball around and everything else. It was so cool she got it on a 3, too. That was ideal.”

Wood needed eight points to reach the milestone and accommodated the visitors who had to leave early by getting them in the first five minutes of the game. She opened the game by banking in a jumper from the top of the key, then hit a layup and two free throws before nailing the 3 the landed her on the number. She finished with 16 points and now has 1,008 in her career.

The goal now is to pass both her sister and brother on the scoring list — and they’re both within reach —but she’ll still be listed behind them on the banner because of the order it occurred.

“I’ve been waiting to see Ryane, Luke, Marley on the banner,” she said.

Taylor Bass had another big game for the Eagles (15-6), hitting four more 3s and scoring 26 points. She’s on track to become the next member of the 1,000-point club, now with 765 career points. Ausland added 14 to her career total and now has 1,064.

Late in the fourth quarter Merritt inserted Kylie Weist in the game. The freshman promptly picked up a loose ball hit a 3-pointer for the first points of her career.

Just 997 points to go.

PENNSVILLE – It’s days like these that make Senior Nights something special.

MACALINO

When Pennsville’s Anikka Macalino tore the ACL in her left knee in the opening minutes of last year’s holiday tournament game against Buena, she didn’t expect to play basketball ever again. If she ever had a chance of coming back at all, she hoped it would be for Senior Night.

Well, not only did she play on Senior Night Thursday, she started (as is customary) and scored the first points of the game in the Eagles’ 60-21 victory over Schalick.

“It meant a lot because I haven’t played in about a year,” Macalino said. “I played JV earlier and my knee just gave up on me. I went into the room and started to cry, but I refused to give up on basketball so I came out and tried again.

“It’s a good feeling scoring the first points of the game.”

And it wasn’t some gift basket to make a player who’d been out all season feel good, either. The Eagles won the opening tip, got it to Macolino and she attacked the basket for a layup. She hit a deep 3-pointer in the third quarter as well.

“To see them go out there and be successful on their night is really kind of cool,” Eagles coach Steve Merritt said.

The game was quietly billed as the night Marley Wood would go over 1,000 career points, but Taylor Bass stole the show.

Bass stood out in the left corner all night and drained a career-best six 3-pointers on the way to a career-high 29 points. The junior hadn’t hit more than three 3s in any game previously in her career, but she was 6-for-7 from beyond the arc against the Cougars.

“I’ve never shot like that before in my life,” she said. “You have those days where you hit them and other days when you don’t. Today was one of those days they went in. I had all those open shots so I took them.”

Wood needed 20 points coming into the game to become the second Pennsville player to reach the 1,000-point mark this season, but had only 12 – and got most of those late. It’s all set up for her to get it Friday when the Eagles host Millville in a game the Thunderbolts agreed to move to Pennsville just for the occasion.

She’s “really excited” about the prospect of joining her sister and brother in the Eagles’ 1,000-Point Club, but it didn’t really hurt her feelings not to get it Thursday.

She said she’d rather do it Friday when more friends, family and especially her AAU teammates and coaches “who are the reason I’m going to score 1,000” could be on hand to witness it. And she didn’t want to steal any thunder from the four seniors who were being honored on their special day.

That mindset was evident early on when she came down on a 2-on-1 break with a clear path to the basket, but she passed to Bass who converted the layup just the same. She had seven assists in the game.

Wood had only five points through the first three quarters, but heated up with all seven of Pennsville’s points in the fourth to get the target down to a manageable number.

“I was getting a little nervous because I only had like five points in all three quarters,” she said. “I wanted to be able to know that I was going to get it tomorrow so I was trying to get at least double digits today so I could have an easier time of it.”

PENNSVILLE – The Woodstown girls basketball team hasn’t had a five-year stranglehold on the TCC Diamond Division by folding under the pressure of a challenge.

The Wolverines faced the sternest late-season challenge to their diamond dynasty Tuesday night, but they never flinched and turned back upstart Pennsville 59-47.

The teams entered the game tied for the Diamond Division lead. Had the Wolverines fallen, it not only would have ended their 34-game Salem County winning streak, it may also have ended their run of four straight division titles.

Now, they’ve won 35 straight against in-county opponents and are on the verge of a fifth straight Diamond Division crown having only the two weakest teams left to play on their divisional schedule.

“At the beginning of the season we set a list of goals and obviously one of those goals was to win the division,” said Woodstown coach Matt Smart, the newest gatekeeper of the dynasty. “It’s something we will never take for granted, especially with this group of girls.

“They come out in games like today, they had a different look on their face. You could tell that we had three days off and they kind of got re-energized, refocused. Basketball is a long season and I think those three days off helped us a lot and you could tell the girls were extremely focused. When we play together like that, we’re just phenomenal.”

The Wolverines trailed only once in the game, at 7-5. From there they went on a 13-2 run to the end of the quarter, capped by Ryann Foote’s bucket at the buzzer, to take control. Foote only regained her eligibility in January after transferring from Salem – where she played for current Pennsville coach Steve Merritt as a freshman – and has brought additional quality to an already stacked line-up.

She had her Woodstown best eight points in the game and pulled down seven rebounds. She called getting the win against a former teammate and coach “put the cherry on top” of the day.

“I was excited because we really needed a win,” Foote said. “We obviously knew we really had to show up and do good, but we didn’t really let that get in our heads. We just knew we had to play our game and work as a team and a family to get it done.”

The Wolverines were led by Talia Battavio (18) and Megan Donelson (13). Battavio hit four 3-pointers and moved within three points of 1,500 for her career. Donelson needs 14 to reach that milestone.

Meanwhile, a big part of the Wolverines’ success came from eliminating one of the Eagles’ three main scorers. Taylor Bass had 18 points and Marley Wood had 15 (to move within 20 points of 1,000), to basically play Battavio and Donelson to a scoring stalemate, but the Wolverines held 1,000-point scorer Nora Ausland scoreless for the second time this season and got modest contributions from their supporting cast..

The Eagles won the last time Ausland was shut out, but that wasn’t the case this time.

“Just watching film on them from our previous game we kind of made a few adjustments and I’ll be honest Meg Donelson came up to me on Monday and said I want to try to guard her,” Smart said. “Whenever Meg comes up to me like that and she has a look on her that’s like we’re doing this (it’s happening).

“She is a phenomenal defender. She always has the hardest assignment every game. She has to output us for offense and stop the girl on defense and she’s always up for the challenge.”

Had Pennsville won the game, the Eagles would have been in good position to win a division title for the first time since 1988. They’d have held a one-game lead on Woodstown with division games left with only Penns Grove and Schalick.

It’s unlikely the Wolverines will lose one of their two remaining division games that would have given the Eagles the chance to climb back into a share for the title.

“I told them 18 games ago, when I pointed that out to you it would have been nice (to get), but I didn’t realize how good you could be,” Merritt said. “I discovered. I learned. Today was a big step. We were there. Nobody expected us to be there, but here we are. I’m proud of them. Of course, I’m disappointed, but I’m proud of them. We hung in there.”

PENNSVILLE – Woodstown coach Ramon Roots’ focus was clearly on the present Tuesday night, but he also got a pretty good glimpse of the future.

The Wolverines had their way with Pennsville in a 68-30 win. It was the kind of game that gave them a chance to do a lot of things, play a lot of different people.

Impressed by his play in a weekend loss to Bridgeton last time out, Roots gave Andrew White his most appreciable minutes of the season and the freshman didn’t disappoint.

White scored a career-high nine points, grabbed four rebounds and blocked a shot.

“At the beginning of the year, like at practice and stuff, you would see glimpses of what he can be,” Roots said. “He’s going to be a big piece of the program in the future. He just got kind of lost in the rotation a little bit, but he’s always been that type of player.

“Then in the Bridgeton game I just happened to try something. He only had like a 2-3 minute stint, but in the first couple possessions he got back-to-back rebounds and he got a putback. I’ve just been impressed at what he’s been doing in practice and the JV level. He’s been working his way up and he’s going to keep on adding minutes.”

White did most of his damage in the second half. He scored eight points in a 32-point third quarter that left the Wolverines with a 37-point lead.

“This means a lot,” he said. “It shows on the varsity level that I can do it.”

As White spoke one of his teammates draped the Wolverine medallion indicative of the game’s MVP around his neck.

“This means everything,” he said. “I worked my butt off to get the chain.”

The big third quarter was the Wolverines’ first 30-point quarter of the season and more than doubled their point production for the game. They opened the half with four straight 3-pointers, two by Alejandro Vazquez and one each from Garrett Leyman and Eli Caesar. The Wolverines hit seven in the game.

Six different players scored in the third quarter, nine players scored in the game.

“Our tempo in the first half was slow,” Roots said. “I was telling the guys before the game let’s pass the ball inside. I think they thought I meant be passive. I was explaining we had 12, 12 and then we had 30. We had more (points) there than in the first half combined.”

Among the other future leanings Roots worked into the game was getting White and fellow freshman Branden Hall on the floor at the same time and giving junior Blake Bialecki extended minutes at point guard. Hall had four points in the third quarter. Bialecki didn’t score in the game, but he dished at least a half-dozen assists in the first half, four in the first quarter.

Clinch the crown

Schalick wins three matches on cutoff day to win first division title in 12 years, Woodstown scores big win over Manasquan, and more

By Riverview Sports News

LINDENWOLD — Schalick wrestling coach Joe Frassenei expected to have continued success when his program split its co-op with Cumberland this season, but he didn’t necessarily expect this kind of success this soon.

The Cougars easily defeated three more teams Saturday in the Lindenwold Quad Meet and when they routed Salem they clinched the Tri-County Conference Classic Division title and their first division crown since 2013.

The Cougars routed Salem 77-6 to complete an undefeated division slate. They also beat Lindenwold 68-11 and Palmyra 79-0. It left them 22-1 at the state cutoff date and a solid No. 4 in the South Jersey Group I power points standings and would probably be higher if they played a stronger schedule.

“We’re pleasantly surprised,” Frassenei said. “We knew we were going to be OK. I did not expect us to be this good this quick. I think we’re a year ahead of where I thought we were going to be. I figured we were going to take a step back a little bit this year because we lost half our team, but actually we’ve done much better than I thought we would.”

When the program split, the Cougars maintained 10 of the weight classes with “their” wrestlers. The four slots they had to fill have done well in their own right.

Gerardo Felipe (215) is 20-6, Collin Bittle (138) is 9-3, Caleb Jenkins is 29-1 moving up to 113 from 106 with his only loss a decision to a former co-op teammate, and Emma Cain (106) is 11-1 but inow focusing on the girls regionals.

Only a handful of Cougars got to wrestle three matches Saturday and many of their bouts were forfeited. Among those who wrestled more than once, Ryan Miller (132) had a tech fall and a pin, Bittle (138) had a major decision and two pins, Eric Sulik (165) had three pins and undefeated Ricky Watt (175) had two tech falls.

“It’s been a satisfying season,” Frassenei said. “The kids have been fantastic, they bought into it and they’re young, so we’re going to have all these kids back next year. Hopefully we can build upon that.”

PENNS GROVE – RaNiyah Wilson knew it was going to be a monumental day when she woke up Thursday morning, but it wasn’t until she got to the gym and saw the presentation in front of her for the first time did she realize what a big deal it really was.

The Penns Grove senior was in line to score her 1,000th career point in the game with Wildwood – she only needed half her average to get it – but the celebration already started before she got into Rudy Baric Gym.

There was a set of gold balloons spelling out “1-0-0-0” behind the Penns Grove bench. There was a banner anticipating the feat behind the Red Devils’ basket. There were hand-held fans with her picture on it and baseball-like player cards.

There was even a cake. Now, all she had to do was complete the task.

Wilson hit the milestone on a layup with 4:01 left in the first half, touching off a celebration that included a short video on the scoreboard of her career. The only thing that dampened the day from a Penns Grove perspective was Wildwood won the game, 56-42.

“It means a lot,” Wilson said of the milestone. “Starting slow in my school seasons and then coming out, starting, getting hotter over time it’s … an unbelievable moment.”

She became the eighth girls player in recorded Penns Grove history to reach the milestone and 20th player in school history. With the 25 she scored against the Warriors she now has 1,013 points for her career.

Wilson started her career at Kingsway, but didn’t become a scorer until she transferred to Penns Grove last year. She scored 251 points at her former school – just 19 as a freshman – and may end up with well over 900 at Penns Grove by the end of this season.

Red Devils coach Jennifer Denby wouldn’t take credit for turning her into scorer. She just “gave her the floor … and she seized the opportunity.”

Wilson has scored in double figures in each of her last 20 games and has had 30 or more four times in her last seven. She’s averaging 24.2 ppg this season on a team that has only seven players.

“As a coach it’s good to see the girls reach a great milestone,” Denby said. “Coaches are just put in place to put the players in place. They’ve got to do the work, and that’s what NyNy is, she’s been putting in the work.

“She came here with a little bit of points and she said she wanted to get her thousand. Every day she’d come into the classroom, write down her plan and stuck to it every day. She wrote it down last year at the end of the season, we made out a plan and she went right through it.”

It hasn’t been lost on the college recruiters. At the moment, Wilson’s three top choices are Delaware State, Morgan State and N.C. Central.

WOODSTOWN 52, CLAYTON 34: Talia Battavio broke out of a mini scoring slump with 21 points, Megan Donelson had 15 and the Wolverines (12-5) played some tenacious defense to snap a three-game losing streak.

Battavio helped the Wolverines get off to fast start with 14 points in a 26-2 first quarter. The Wolverines led 38-8 at halftime, holding the Clippers to only three field goals.

The losing streak was the program’s longest since early in the 2022-23 season. Woodstown coach Matt Smart said it felt “very good” to get back on the winning side of things.

“The team played together,” he said. “Our defense led to offensive output. We had lot of girls get into the game at critical times and perform well. They played with confidence and had a lot of fun today.”

Boys games

PENNSVILLE 66, SALEM TECH 49: Wins have been hard to come by for the Eagles this season this season, so when one does come around it’s worth celebrating.

The Eagles snapped a 12-game losing streak when they beat the Chargers for the second time this season.

“We came through a very tough part of our schedule where we faced tough opposition every night and tonight it was our chance to execute the way we want to,” Pennsville coach Joe Mecholsky said. “We’ve been priding ourselves on defense and tonight we let our defense do the talking. The ball went in the basket and it felt good to get back on the winning side of the ledger.”

Jovanni Rios got the Eagles (2-15) off to a quick start scoring nine in the first quarter and 21 of his career-high 28 points in the first half. The junior was 11-of-15 from the floor. He also grabbed five rebounds and had seven steals. He has scored 49 points over the last three games.

“He was the whole reason we got out early,” Mecholsky said. “He was just everywhere. He really played hard tonight.

“He’s been the biggest positive surprise in this season. He wouldn’t have been given the chance to develop under different circumstances, but he’s taken advantage of the opportunity he was given and really ran with it.”

PENNSVILLE (2-15): Danny Knight 1-4 1-3 4, Jovanni Rios 11-15 6-11 28, Mason O’Brien 2-10 0-5 4, Logan Hitt 2-2 0-0 4, Cole Johnston 3-10 0-0 8, C.J. PENNS GROVE 60, WILDWOOD 47: The Red Devils put together a big second half to pull away from a tied game that extended their winning streak to six in a row and got them over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2020-21 season. The win also snapped a three-game losing streak against the Warriors.

“Well, in ’20 we won the South Jersey Group I sectional so we graduated that class and the last four years we have been growing the program back after COVID,” Red Devils coach Damian Ware said. “This was the next group of kids that have the basketball skills to be successful.

“But being so young and playing the tough schedule early in the year has allowed us to see great competition and now we are reaping the benefits of it.”

The teams battled to a 29-29 tie in the first half, then the Red Devils outscored their hosts 31-18 in the second. Karon Ceaser and Roman Gipson combined for 21 points in the second half. Ceaser hit three of his four 3s in the third quarter to give the Red Devils some separation.

Ceaser finished with 19 points. Gipson had 15 and Will Roy 11.

PENNSVILLE — Nora Ausland thought she’s be able to go to bed Monday night as routinely and calm as as anyone could be on the verge of a major milestone, but the anticipation of what the next day held proved too much to sleep on.

She tossed and turned all night, and when she did nod off she dreamed of what was to come and then woke up realizing it hadn’t happened yet. The school day provided a suitable distraction, but when she got to the gym and saw the family gathering in the upper rows of the bleachers the butterflies returned.

Once she got in the game, though, the nerves gave way to normal game-day focus and she was able to settle into the game.

Then came the moment of truth. The Pennsville senior became Salem County’s newest 1,000-point scorer and joined her brother on the elite list while scoring a Pennsville career-high 28 points Tuesday as the Eagles soared past Overbrook 67-25.

She needed 13 points to reach the milestone and she hit the number on a free throw with 6:10 left in the second quarter. She hit a 3 moments earlier to get to 999. She now has 1,015 points for her career.

“It feels like a weight has been lifted off of me and I’m proud of myself that I was able to reach that even being out half of my sophomore season and a few games last year,” she said. “I’m glad I was able to do that.”

Ausland scored her first 462 points in two seasons at Salem, and missed 14 games her sophomore year because of injury.

Ironically, she scored her 1,000th point against the team she scored her first points against and did it for the coach with whom she started her career at Salem, Steve Merritt. She scored a team-high 15 points as a freshman against Overbrook in her high school debut Dec. 17, 2021.

Her first points in that game came on a short jumper after missing on a 3-ball, her dad and trainer Mike Ausland said.

“That’s something I had no idea about; completely lost track of that,” Merritt said. “I was happy to be here, it was good fun. And she deserves it, it’s a long road. It’s a good night.”

As much as everyone wanted it to happen Tuesday, there were no special arrangements to get her the ball to make it happen. The points she was going to get were going to come within the framework of the offense.

The first time she touched the ball she dished it off to Taylor Bass for an opening 3-pointer. She didn’t score for the first time until midway through the first quarter when she gave the Eagles the lead for good. She also had 14 rebounds (for 521 in her career) and seven assists.

Her next target on the points parade is brother Gage, who scored 1,144 points in three seasons at Salem before graduating in 2020.

“It meant a lot to me because my brother, he got it in his three years; I wanted to be like him,” Nora said. “That’s what influenced me to do that first. Now that I finally get it I feel accomplished. So now my goal is to beat him, of course.”

“And she’ll beat me, too,” Gage said.

With Ausland safely over the 1,000-point barrier, the focus now turns on Marley Wood’s quest for the milestone. Wood, a junior, is 69 points away from the number.

If she hits it, she will be the third member of her on the list. Luke Wood, who is not playing basketball this season to focus on baseball, has 1,198 career points. Their sister Ryane, a 2022 Pennsville grad, has 1,224 points and is the school’s fourth all-time leading girls scorer.

“I’m really excited because I want to see my name up on the banner with my brother and my sister,” Marley said.

Katie Kline is Pennsville’s all-time leading scorer in girls basketball with 2,110 points. She graduated in 2004.

PENNS GROVE 51, SCHALICK 43: RaNiyah Wilson moved closer to becoming Penns Grove’s next 1,000-point scorer when she went for 31 points and was the difference against a Cougars team that gave the Red Devils a battle for four quarters.

Wilson needs 11 points to join the elite club teammate Meely Horace joined last season and is projected to get it Thursday at home against Wildwood. She has gone for 30 or more twice in the last week as she closed the gap on the milestone.

The Cougars limited the senior guard to 11 points in the first half on 5-of-19 shooting, but she got loose for 20 in the second half.

Penns Grove pulled away from a close game with eight straight points early in the second quarter, but Schalick never went away. The Cougars needed three players to match Wilson’s production. Freshman Navaeh Robinson (11), Ava Scurry (10) and Cali Fisler (10) combined for 31 points.

GLASSBORO 52, WOODSTOWN 44: The Bulldogs put together a big fourth quarter to upset Woodstown and hand the Wolverines their third straight loss and snapped their 38-game winning streak against TCC Diamond Division opponents.

Woodstown held a 36-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs went on a 20-8 tear to snap a four-game losing streak.

Kezia Brackett was Glassboro’s leading scorer with 14 points, but Sanaa Thomas scored eight of her 13 in the fourth quarter to lead its comeback.

“They were ferocious on the glass today and played great defense on our drives,” Woodstown coach Matt Smart said. “Brackett and Thomas played with an extreme tenacity on both ends of the floor. They were able to attack the basket, grab offensive and defensive rebounds and pressure the ball.

“They had other girls make big shots when they had the chance to. Their ability to close our and defense our drives without fouling made it difficult to score. They did not give up many second chance opportunities to us.”

Megan Donelson led the Wolverines with 17 points and pulled into a tie with teammate Talia Battavio for second place on Woodstown’s all-time girls scoring list, 108 points behind the top spot. She had five of their points in the fourth quarter and 12 in the second half.

The three-game losing streak is Woodstown’s longest since early in the 2022-23 season. Tuesday’s loss sets up a potential Diamond Division championship game showdown at Pennsville Feb. 4.

“We did not execute tonight,” Smart said. “We talk about playing our style of basketball each and every night — pressure the ball, push the pace, try and get open looks — and we did not do that tonight. We tried to force some shots that were not there instead of working to get an easy shot.

“While the last three games are obviously disappointing, the great thing about basketball is we get to play another game on Thursday (at Clayton). We need to find that Woodstown Basketball that makes us who we are. We need to play with confidence. I have no doubt the girls will be up for that challenge.”

SALEM 72, WILDWOOD 43: Xavier McGriff continued his recent run of strong play, going for a career-high 22 points to lead the Rams to a third straight win that got them back to .500 (8-8) after forfeiting four wins due to an ineligible player. The Rams are 5-1 since the ruling Jan. 13.

McGriff, a junior guard, has scored 56 points during the three-game winning streak. He had 21 points in his previous game against Pennsville.

“He’s been in the program three years, played JV for two years and just stuck with it,” Rams coach Anthony Farmer said. “He’s just a real hard worker, he listens, he’s good in the classroom, he’s good in the hallways, he’s good in the locker room.

“You know, the basketball gods tend to reward kids who put the work in on and off the floor and right now it’s just coming to light. I’m glad the kid’s shooting the ball well, it’s the perfect time of the season, and I hope he keeps lightin’ it up.”

Neziah Spence also had a career night, going for 18 points. Tymear Lecator had 11 points and 12 rebounds and came within two assists of a triple-double. Deshaan Williams also had a double-double (14 points/10 rebounds) and Antwuan Rogers grabbed 12 boards.

It was their fifth straight win to get back to .500 (7-7) on the season.

Gionni Conrad, a part-time varsity player, came off the bench and scored all five of his points in the second quarter when the Red Devils outscored the Cougars 24-9 to take control of the game. Will Roy scored seven of his 11 in the quarter and Roman Gipson threw in eight of his team-high 17.

“Next man up mentality,” Penns Grove coach Damian Ware said.

Jameel Horace continued his run of strong play with a career-high 15 points. He has averaged 13 points over the past three games.
