MEDIA, Pa. — The Salem CC baseball went into their weekend series with Delaware County CC looking to prove a point. They did it, emphatically, the old fashioned way — by winning.

The Mighty Oaks completed the sweep of their series with the Phantoms by sweeping Saturday’s doubleheader, 13-2 and 10-6.

The team didn’t take kindly to the way the Phantoms messed with them late in a game the Mighty Oaks were winning big in their late-season run to a playoff berth last year and more than a few of their personnel advocated burying them the next time they played.

To their credit, they didn’t resort to stealing bases or bunting runners over with a big lead or doing any of the other untoward things against the unwritten rules of the game. They simply played to win the game.

“We just played baseball,” Mighty Oaks coach John Holt said. “We had a guy get hurt (in that game) and that was the thing that kind of upset us a little bit. But it’s baseball, at the end of the day we’ve gotta play the game and we’re going to play the game the right way.

“There were things I wanted to get accomplished this weekend in regards to getting better and working on some of the fundamentals we had been lacking. We needed to prove to ourselves that we were better than what we had been playing. We had to work on some things and we had an opportunity to work on those things and I think we got better by seeing a little bit of success.”

They certainly set the tone early, like first-pitch early. Back in the leadoff spot for the first time this season, Yen Rodriguez opened the game by hitting the first pitch to right for a home run. The sophomore outfielder had two hits in each game, stole four bases in the opener and hit for the cycle in the doubleheader.

The leadoff homer touched off a five-run first that had the Mighty Oaks (3-5) off and running.

“We had to move him back to the leadoff spot because of Jason LeBold’s hamstring issue and he was a little nervous,” Holt said. “He talked to the coaches prior and we basically said in an 0-0 count, it’s a damage count, so it doesn’t matter if you’re the leadoff guy or the 3 guy or the 2 guy have a good approach and he really did focus on his approach today and it paid off for him.”

Rodriguez wasn’t the only Salem player to have a big day.

Demetrius DeRamus reached base three times in the opener, had two hits in the nightcap and stole five bases in the doubleheader. Tyler Hacker went 4-for-4 with four runs and five RBIs in the doubleheader. Cole Dawson went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases from the 9-hole in the opener and had four hits on the day.

Both starting pitchers gave the Mighty Oaks a chance. Game 1 starter J.D. Wilson started off a little shaky after waiting out the long visitors first, loading the bases with a single and two walks, then roared back to strike out the side. He finished with seven strikeouts in three innings and the four relievers that followed him gave up one earned run and fanned five more.

Nightcap starter Jared Vandersteur kept the Phantoms off the board through the first three innings and the Mighty Oaks gave him an 8-0 lead, so the four runs he allowed in the fourth were just an annoyance. He went five innings and struck out seven.

“We played well,” Holt said. “We’re not satisfied yet. We can continue to get better. Approach at the plate has gotten better and that’s something we’ve been trying to focus on. Defense we’re working on. Pitching, obviously, did a lot better.

All in all I’m happy with the sweep, but in the things we’re working on and the things we’re trying to get  better I did see some significant improvement.”

The Mighty Oaks head out to Florida at 5:30 Sunday morning. They open play Monday with a doubleheader against Alexandria Tech & CC. Freshmen Pat Seitzinger and Seth McCormick are Salem’s scheduled starters. At some point in the 12-game trip the Mighty Oaks hope to see the much-anticipated debut of Fernando Rodney Jr., the son of the former MLB All-Star pitcher known for his 11 teams and crooked hat, out of the bullpen.

“Historically we normally like to get those games in before conference play,” Holt said. “With the conference expanding this isn’t so much a preparation for conference any more. It’s an opportunity to get ready for the rest of the conference season and kind of sure things up.”

No-no for Gambone

Salem CC right-hander pitches his first no-hitter since high school, maybe Mighty Oaks’ first ever, in 18-2 rout of Delaware County CC

CARNEYS POINT — Jon Gambone has been on a long road back from multiple surgeries to return to the mound. It wasn’t that Friday night marked the end of the comeback trail, but it was a pretty good sign he’s moving in the right direction.

The big right-hander threw his first no-hitter since high school — four years ago — and maybe the first in Salem CC history after he fashioned a seven-inning gem in the Mighty Oaks’ first win of the season, 18-2 over Delaware County CC.

Gambone threw 82 pitches, mostly fastballs and sliders, to get through the Phantoms. He allowed only three base-runners — an infield error in the third, an outfield error in the fifth and two on errors and a full-count walk in the seventh — and faced only two batters over the minimum. He struck out 10.

It was a stark contrast to his first two starts when he had trouble finding the zone. Both lasted only three innings – 42 total batters – and yielded 13 hits, seven walks and 15 runs (10 earned). He did bring it back somewhat in his next two innings in the opener, but not in his second start against Brookdale, which he admitted had him down on himself.

“Honestly I did not see that coming at all,” Gambone said. “Actually I didn’t even I was throwing today. Found out when I got here that I was throwing, then had to get myself mentally right and then just went out there and did the best I could do.

“I don’t know how it happened, I just went out there. I tried not to think about it, too, throughout the whole game because I knew I had a no hitter. And nobody was talking to me. I knew that’s why it happened, too, because no one said the words.”

Mighty Oaks head coach John Holt couldn’t remember a no-hitter in his tenure with the team and neither could volunteer assistant John Green, the former head coach, in his. In addition to the 10 punch outs, Gambone got seven ground ball outs and three fly outs.

Salem CC pitcher Jon Gambone (L) and catcher Angel Velez share a smile after Gambone’s no-hitter in the Mighty Oaks’ win over Delaware County CC Friday. (Top photo) The pitcher is congratulated by his teammates in the post-game handshake line.

Gambone threw a five-inning no-hitter against Pilgrim Academy his senior year at Gateway (2021). He also was credited with a five-inning one-hitter against Woodbury as a sophomore. He’s since undergone a series of surgeries, including hip and Tommy John, that has kept him off the mound until this spring.

“It’s something,” Holt said. “For him coming back off of surgery and all the work that he’s put in, it’s well deserved. He works very hard. I’m happy to see the success he had. It’s been a long road for him to get back and … he’s starting to find his rhythm a little bit.”

The gem was the fourth no-hitter Salem catcher Angel Velez has caught in his career. He knew the pitcher had it in him.

“Gambone’s always good,” Velez said. “He goes out there and gives all he’s got every time. He doesn’t leave any in the tank.”

Actually, there was some uncertainty if Gambone would draw the start Friday. It originally was going to Jared Vandersteur, but then Holt got to thinking about the team’s upcoming trip to Florida, potential matchups there and who needed what time to recover and decided to give the ball to Gambone. Besides, the 6-4, 230-pound sophomore has been the Mighty Oaks’ regular Friday starter and the decision allowed Holt to keep that routine intact.

The Mighty Oaks (1-5) had been on the other side of games like Friday in each of their first five starts. This time they led wire to wire. Delco starter Hunter Whitten did keep their hitters off-balance early with breaking pitches, but they finally broke it open with six runs in the fifth and buried the Phantoms with nine in the sixth.

They had extra incentive for this one. They were miffed at the way Delco small-balled them to death in the sixth inning of a game Salem was leading 24-3 late last season and were anxious to show their displeasure Friday.

The tension was palpable, but Holt downplayed the revenge factor.

“We were just playing baseball,” he said.

The series concludes with a doubleheader at Delco Saturday before the Mighty Oaks fly off to Florida early Sunday morning.

Double time

Salem CC softball scores second straight sweep, this time behind breakout day by Ella Hayes, heads into Southern swing 4-0

PENNSVILLE — The first four hitters in the Salem CC softball lineup all have doubles Ls in their first name. As productive as they’ve been on the field, especially on this day, they’re the perfect combination to avoid doubles Ls in any doubleheader.

The First Four in the Mighty Oaks’ batting order Friday – Lilly Peverelle, Ella Hayes, Bella Rappa and Callie Rozak – were a combined 17-of-27 with 21 runs scored and 14 RBIs in a double run-rule sweep of Sussex County CC, 13-5 in six innings and 22-0 in five.

In last week’s season-opening sweep of Monroe Bronx, the four hit 3, 2, 5, 4 in the order and went 12-for-25 with nine runs and 11 RBIs. But against the Skylanders, Peverelle was penciled into the leadoff spot, Hayes stayed in the 2-hole, Rappa went third and Rozak hit cleanup.

“We kind of shifted a little bit to see what kind of spark we could get with this starting four lineup,” Salem coach Angel Rodriguez said. “Last week it was the bottom of our lineup that was finding ways on. Today, it was the top of the lineup doing what we were hoping they’d do.

“Hitting is contagious. They’re feeding off each other. They’re talking in between their at bats and it’s leading to their success right now. They had a very good day today.”

At the top of the list, but not the top of the lineup, was Hayes. The Skylanders, who were just getting outside for the first time season, simply couldn’t get her out.

The third-team JUCO All-American and reigning Region XIX Player of the Year, who incidentally wears a double number (11 – the same as her SCC baseball-playing boyfriend Chris Kelly), went 10-for-10 with six doubles, a grand slam, 19 total bases and 11 RBIs.

Hayes went 5-for-5 in each game with doubles in her first four at bats in the opener and the grand slam and eight RBIs in the nightcap. She also made a nice stop in the hole at short to start an inning-ending double play that killed a Skylanders threat in the nightcap.

“It felt great,” she said between games. “It definitely felt like a redemption from last game. I was just sick last game (and it) took a lot of energy from me, so today I brought extra energy since I lacked it last game.”

Going back to last week, the sophomore has reached base in her last 12 plate appearances (11-for-11 with a hit by pitch) and has failed to reach just three times in 20 PAs. She’s hitting .824 for the year (14-of-17) and definitely on pace for one of her goals — to hit .700 or better this season, which is certainly attainable if she meets another goal to be more aggressive at the plate and on the bases.

“She’s a ballplayer,” Rodriguez said. “She wasn’t named All-American and Player of the Year for no reason. She’s always looking to do the next best thing and the goals she sets she wants to go get them. I think today she found her groove. Picking up kind of where she left off last year with that game right there, so hopefully that continues to build for the remainder of the season.”

As for the others in the First Four …

Paverelle, who had the walk-off hit in the season-opening win, officially was 1-for-5 in the twinbill, but reached safely seven of nine times, scored seven runs and brought in three additional runs when the Skylanders misplayed balls she put in play. Rappa was 3-for-5 with a sacrifice and sac fly, four runs scored and reached base six times. Rozak was 3-for-7, on base five times and scored four runs. Even the Double-L who pinch-hit for Peverelle in the sixth inning of the nightcap, Polly Chavez, got a single.

“I don’t want to toot our own horn, but we’re very good,” Rappa said of the group. “We can see the ball very well, we can adjust really quickly and the communication is very good. They’re amazing. We get it going and the bottom keeps it rolling.”

After the year Hayes had last year there was some debate whether she would return to the Mighty Oaks for her sophomore year or opt for a bigger stage. Salem officials convinced her with another big year on the JUCO level she could command even more and better opportunities on the four-year market. Additionally, the new rule allowing JUCO players a fresh full eligibility slate at a four-year school made returning appealing.

The doubleheader itself followed almost the same script as last week’s sweep, except the Mighty Oaks didn’t have to win the first game in the bottom of the seventh. They did, however, have to come from behind after giving up three in the top of the first.

They took the lead with five in the second and continued to pour it on, walking it off on Rappa’s sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Then in the nightcap they scored nine in the first, highlighted by Hayes’ slam, and went for nine again in the third. They went on top last week with 11 in the first after walking off the opener.

CARNEYS POINT – Mike Green remembers his first Selection Show when he played in college. The excitement and anticipation were real.

It was pretty much a given that year his Butler team was going to get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The drama was where it would go, how high it would be seeded and who they were going to play in the first round.

When their name finally went up on the screen the players leapt out of their seats and the room erupted in cheers.

Green wanted that for his Salem CC basketball team Wednesday as they watched the selection show for the NJCAA Division III Tournament together for the first time. The Mighty Oaks knew they had a spot in the field as North Atlantic District B champions. All they were waiting to hear was their seed and road to the championship.

They didn’t have to wait long. The Mighty Oaks (23-7) were installed as the No. 10 seed and will open the tournament against seventh-seeded 13th-ranked Riverland (Minn.) CC (29-3) at Herikmer College Wednesday at 4 p.m.

When their name finally appeared on the screen, everybody who came to watch the show on three big-screen TVs in the fieldhouse cheered loudly.

“It was a one-in-a-lifetime thing because I’ve never experience this before,” freshman guard Xavier Brewington said. “I feel great for our team. I feel confident in our team. We’re going to try to win it all.”

Teams are guaranteed two games in the tournament. If the Mighty Oaks beat Riverland, they’ll play second-seeded No. 3 Mohawk Valley Thursday at 6. If they lose their opener, they’ll get the loser of Region XIX rival Union and Genesee CC at 11 a.m. They’ll keep playing as long as they keep winning, but they can only win the tournament from the winner’s bracket.

When it revealed the Mighty Oaks could get Mohawk Valley (26-1) in the second round, leading scorer Akeem Taylor didn’t flinch. “We want them,” he said from his seat on the floor. Mohawk Valley leads JUCO D-III in scoring defense.

“We want everybody,” Taylor said. “They’re just ranked so high, why wouldn’t we want to play them? We want to show that we’re the best, so that’s what we’ve got to go through.”

“It seems like he embraces being the underdog,” Green said.

As soon as the show ended, Green headed to his office to do some research on their opening-round opponent.

“I don’t know much about them,” he said. “I just know they’re a higher seed than us.

“We’re not familiar with any of these teams. We don’t watch them all year long; it’s not like the NCAA. You just don’t know. We’ve got to put work in and figure them out. We’ve got seven days to figure them out.”

Riverland was ranked No. 1 for 12 consecutive weeks earlier this season. The Blue Devils are led by Nazih Chehade, a 6-4 sophomore guard from Florida averaging 14.9 ppg, 7.3 rpg, shooting 58 percent from the field and has 127 assists.

ACORNS: Salem is one of two unranked teams in the 12-team field … The Mighty Oaks will leave for the tournament Monday, but won’t practice at the facility until Tuesday … Riverland has three scorers averaging in double figures.

PENNSVILLE – The Salem CC softball team opened its 2025 season in a most dramatic fashion and carried that emotion into an 11-run first inning in the nightcap to sweep Monroe-Bronx 7-6 and 19-6 Saturday at the Pennsville LL Complex.

Lilly Peverelle’s one-out single in the bottom of the seventh plated Ella Hayes with the winning run in the opener. Hayes, last year’s Region XIX Player of the Year, started the rally with a line single to center and stole second before riding home on Pavarelle’s second hit of the game.

The Mighty Oaks came from behind twice to win it. They trailed 3-0 in the second and 5-4 in the fifth.

Peverelle, Hayes, Bella Rappa and Jill Robinson all had two hits in the game. Robinson also had three RBIs and pitched the final inning and a third to get the win.

“It’s early in the season for these feelings but it was an exciting moment for the team,” Salem coach Angel Rodriguez said. “We had to work through some rust in that game. It was an up and down battle, but the team kept their composure and finished strong.”

And it carried over into the nightcap.

The Mighty Oaks sent 16 batters to the plate in the first. Eight of the first nine hitters reached safely with the only interruption being a successful sacrifice. Among the big hits in the inning, Rappa had a go-ahead single, Val Hatterer a two-run double, Robinson a two-run single and Callie Rozak a two-run homer.

Robinson had two hits and four RBIs from the No. 9 spot in the order. Hayes had two hits and two RBIs. Peverelle and Hatterer each had two RBIs and Rozak drove in three.

“The message was clear to the team after Game 1: Enjoy the first win but (have a) short memory and prepare for Game 2,” Rodriguez said. “We learned a lot with our approaches and getting in our first competition, but we had to look back in and get the job done again.

“We talked with some players on adjustments going into the next game and they were ready.”

Salem CC wins district basketball title, headed to JUCO Division III nationals for first time in school history; Taylor named tournament MVP

By Al Muskewitz
Riverview Sports News

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Salem CC basketball team has been a second-half club all season long. So why should things be any different in its biggest game in school history.

The Mighty Oaks already had a six-point lead when they went into halftime Saturday, then they opened the second on a 12-0 run to take complete control of their Region XIX North Atlantic District B championship game on the way to a 74-66 win over second-seeded Montgomery County CC to earn their first ever trip to the JUCO national Tournament.

“It’s a great feeling, a feeling I’ve never felt before,” freshman swingman Tamir Powell said. “I’ve never won anything in high school, ever before. This is my first championship. It feels great.”

Now they’re headed to Herikmer (N.Y.) College to play for the Division III national title March 11-15. EIght district champions and four at-large selections will make up the field. The bracket will be announced at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Union (Region XIX/North Atlantic A) and Dallas College-Mountain View (South Central) also have locked up tournament bids. The remaining automatic bids should be filled Sunday.

“It feels good just to give these guys another chance to get looked at, to get seen,” Mighty Oaks coach Mike Green said. “I told them all year long the nationals is where you want to be. You’ll have a bunch of coaches there and they only want winners, man, and we’re a winner, so I’m just happy I got a chance to deliver on my promise.

“They (Montco) were the defending champs and we came in and took care of business.”

And it wasn’t that close.

It’s not so much that the Mighty Oaks (23-7) pulled away in the second half to win their first district title – they only outscored the Mustangs 40-38 – but rather the way they did it and the smoothness with which they maintained the lead.

The run out in the first four minutes of the second half gave them an 18-point lead that never fell back into single digits until the final two minutes.

“It was all motivation,” Powell said. “We took what we had the last game and we brought the energy, we brought the fight and the grit. We knew we were the better team so we went out and played like it.”

Sophomore Akeem Taylor, who wasn’t even considered for the All-Region XIX Team because he joined the team at mid-season, was clearly the difference in the game. He went for 27 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots and was named MVP of the District B tournament, basically the Mighty Oaks’ half of the Region XIX bracket.

He had 18 points, four rebounds and six assists in the Might Oaks’ tournament opening win at CC of Philadelphia. Both teams they took down in the tournament beat them in one-possession games during the regular season.

“I feel like the last time they got us because of me,” Taylor said. “I think I went out in the first half with three fouls. I wasn’t playing at 100 percent. It was just all about revenge. That’s what I think motivated me today. There was a lot of extra motivation.”

Green, who orchestrated the best turnaround in the league in his first full season at the helm, was named District Coach of the Year as the coach of Saturday’s winning team.

Powell started the Mighty Oaks’ second-half run with a bucket and 3-pointer. He had 11 points in the half and finished with 19; he’s been averaging 15 over his last five games. Xavier Brewington had 10 points and Jyheim Spencer had another double-double (11/10).

Montco had three scorers in double figures but none of its other four scorers had more than five points.

“Our bench played well; that’s the difference,” Green said. “That’s why everybody says why do you play 12 players – because you can wear teams down.

“They had a short bench. Our bench came and gave us minutes and gave our starters a rest and when they got in they were much stronger. It worked out how we planned it, man.”

And now they’re making plans for an even bigger tournament.

Another hard loss

Salem CC baseball suffers third straight lop-sided loss; Rodriguez hits Mighty Oaks’ first homer of the year; Holt: ‘We’ve got to stop playing scared’

By Al Muskewitz
Riverview Sports News

CARNEYS POINT – The tough start to a new season continued for the Salem CC baseball team Friday afternoon as the Mighty Oaks suffered a third straight lop-sided loss in their home opener.

Eight infield errors in the first five innings led to at least nine unearned runs and the bats were silent most of the game in a 22-6 loss to third-ranked Brookdale at the Carneys Point Rec Complex.

It was the Mighty Oaks’ third straight loss by double digits to open the season.

“We’ve got to keep routine plays routine; simple game,” Salem coach John Holt said he told his team after the game. “At one point it was nine unearned runs. You can’t win baseball games that way.

“We’ve got to stop playing scared.”

Just like after Sunday’s doubleheader against Sussex it was hard for Holt to find something positive to take away from the day. If you really pushed, it might be answering Brookdale’s four-run visitors’ first with four when they came to bat. Or Yen Rodriguez hitting their first home run of the season in his first home at-bat, a two-run shot in that four-run response.

But there wasn’t much beyond that. Brookdale kept scoring after its first-inning outburst. The Mighty Oaks didn’t get another hit after theirs until scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh of a game that was destined for the seven-inning run rule.

They did threaten in the fifth. They loaded the bases with one out on two walks and an infield error, but Brookdale starter Tyler Spencer struck out the next two batters to end the threat and complete his day.

In fact, the Jersey Blues (4-0) scored in every inning to extend another unwalcomed Salem streak. The Mighty Oaks (0-3) have given up a run in each of their last 17 innings. The last time they put up a defensive zero was the third inning of last week’s Game 1 against Sussex CC.

It’s a head-scratcher.

“We’ve got to figure it out,” Holt said.

The series concludes Saturday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader at Brookdale. J.D. Wilson and Jared Vandersteur, a pair of Pennsville products, are expected to start on the mound for Salem.

ACORNS: Demetrius DeRamus had a pair of doubles for the Mighty Oaks and reached base three times … Angel Velez and Tyler Hacker also reached base three times … Rodriguez homered in his first home at-bat last year, too. It was an inside-the-park job in his first college at-bat.

All-star snub

Despite their powerful stats, Salem CC’s Taylor and Spencer left off the All-Region 19 Division III Teams

By Al Muskewitz
Riverview Sports News

CARNEYS POINT – Mike Green will stand up for his guys as high as the day is long, but when the results of this year’s Region XIX All-Division III basketball team crossed his field of view he just couldn’t stand still.

Green’s improved Salem CC team has two of the more dynamic players in the entire region let alone Division III – 6-4 sophomore guard Akeem Taylor and 6-8 freshman post Jyheim Spencer – but when the region’s “All” teams crossed the coach’s clipboard Thursday neither were on any of the three teams. It was presumably because they became eligible at mid-year and didn’t meet the criteria of playing in at least 80 percent of their teams games.

They certainly played in 80 percent of the 14 regular-season games for which they were eligible after being activated Jan. 7. Spencer played in them all and Taylor missed two (86 percent). They both played in Wednesday’s post-season win at CC of Philadelphia.

You can’t argue with their impact or production. Green said the whole first month of the season the Mighty Oaks would be a different team when they joined the lineup and they have been. Salem is 12-3 since they started playing.

Taylor would have been among the Division III leaders in scoring (20.8 ppg) and was undoubtedly the straw the stirred the Mighty Oaks’ drink. Spencer averages a double-double (13.3 ppg/14.3 rpg) and would be the second-leading rebounder in Division III nationally and sixth in blocked shots (42/2.8 per game) had he played enough games to qualify. He already has one Division I offer.

When they first handed Green the all-star list the second-year coach looked to see what he already suspected and threw the paper in the trash. One of his assistants pulled it back and he glanced again to make sure he hadn’t overlooked anything in haste and then tossed it back in again.

The Division III MVP was Sean Emfinger of Montgomery, who the Mighty Oaks will face in Saturday’s North Atlantic District B championship game at Northampton. Green was fine with that call. Emfinger averaged 20.2 ppg (22.1 in conference games) and 8.3 rebounds with 124 assists and 60 steals. He put 19 and 12 on the Mighty Oaks when they played Feb. 4.

Green called the type of season his two players had “amazing years, first-team all-conference type years, an All-American type of year.”

Spencer did get placed on the ballot for second team from what Green was told. Alas, there will be none of that.

“With the way things go around this league I’m never surprised,” Green said. “It’s kind of a fraternity I haven’t gotten in yet. It’s just my first full year.

“Hopefully these guys aren’t penalizing my players because of who they think I am, because they don’t know me. I don’t hardly even know these guys. Hopefully they don’t think the success I had has anything to do with these kids. They’re not playing against me. I kind of get a feeling these guys think they’re beating me, Mike Green, instead of Salem from the way these guys are celebrating after the game.”

The snubs do add fuel to another interesting debate – is Green a viable Coach of the Year candidate? After all, his team put together a record-breaking season with 22 wins (so far), a region-best 8.5-game overall turnaround (11 in the win column) and a spot in the district title game – all without one all-region player.

“The way things are going you’d think it would be me, right?,” he said, not that he’s worried about it. “What they’re telling me is we don’t have a top 15 player in the league, so how are we in the championship game? So, I should be Coach of the Year just on that, but there are a lot of coaches in the league doing a great job. That could go either way.”

If the snub is bothering the two Mighty Oaks stars, they don’t seem to be letting on.

“They’re mature,” Green said. “They’ve got bigger fish to fry. They’ve got a championship (to pursue) and they’re getting recruiting. They’ll get a last laugh.”
