Woodstown siblings run in Meet of Champions together, only second brother-sister combo to run same race, same year

HOLMDEL – Jacob Marino has made a lot of memories during his cross country career, but none likely compared to the piece of his history he and sister Abby carved out at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions Saturday.

While several family members have run together in the elite race over the years, the Woodstown siblings became only the second brother-sister combination to run in it the same year. Both qualified with top 10 finishes in last week’s state Group I meet here.

“It was very cool,” Jake said of the experience as the family drove back from Holmdel Park. “We got to practice together all week and we just really bonded over the week. Really, were trying to do something special this weekend and it was great to be able to race with her.”

Jacob finished 94th in the final cross country race of his high school career, coming home in 17:10.07, some 30 seconds better than his MOC time of a year ago and about eight seconds off his PR for the course.

Abby, a sophomore, was running with a cold and went the distance in the girls race, placing 153rd in 22:03.78.

“For my race I had a great race, I’m very happy with the way I’m ending off my career,” Jacob said. “In the top 100 of runners throughout the state, so that was great for me. A big improvement from last year (125th, 17:41), so really happy with how I ended off there.

“I was feeling really great going up to the big hill and I just didn’t recover fast enough to break that 17 mark, but I’m still really happy with how it turned out.”

Abby said not feeling well made it “just difficult” to get through the race, but she was going to run “no matter what” and was determined to finish. She, too, enjoyed the week training and running with her brother.

“I kind of wish it did go better because I am sick right now, but I still raced,” she said. “For being sick, I’m not completely disappointed in my time, but I did wish I did a lot better.”

Luke Hnatt of team champion Christian Brothers Academy won the boys race (15:22.86) and Leah Starkey of Ocean Twp. won the girls race (17:14.33). Union Catholic won the girls team title.

HOLMDEL – Steve New doesn’t mind digging deep when it comes to chasing cross country history. Some might find it painstaking and tedious, but he’s digging because he thinks he’s going to find treasure.

That’s the reason the Woodstown cross country coach will be happily diving into the history of the state cross country championship today looking to find the last time the Wolverines did as well as they showed Saturday at Holmel Park.

The Wolverines came in third at the Group I boys meet, and that’s as good as New can ever remember. They scored 140 points, pulling behind team champion Glassboro and runner-up Metuchen and solidly ahead of fourth-place Indian Hills. All five of their counters placed in the top 50 among runners competing on teams.

“In all honesty I would have loved to have gotten second; you can actually come home with a pretty cool trophy,” New said. “But I can’t complain. They got up on the podium, they got to get up on the stage, they got recognized for a third-place finish.

“I’ve never seen that in my years coaching here, and I’ve looked back a decent amount and I’ve never seen anything like that. I was pumped by it. I couldn’t have been more pleased with how they ran. Everyone ran tough. That made that two-hour school bus ride well worth it.”

(Upon a deep dive into the records Sunday morning, New discovered this was indeed the Wolverines’ best finish ever. He went all the way back to 1919 and they had never finished higher than 11th (last year) before.)

One of the keys to their high finish was the showing of Torsten Duva and Jackson Perry. Normally fifth and sixth finishers, they were the Wolverines’ fourth and fifth runners across the line on this day. Jake Marino, Karson Chew and David Farrell were their first three.

“Third place doesn’t move us on to MOC as a team but it’s a really good place for us and I’m happy with how everyone did,” Chew said. “We all finished close to each other and all around did everything we needed to do to have a great states.”

The Wolverines grabbed another piece of history that was even harder to find. Siblings Jake and Abby Marino both scored top 10 finishes in their respective races to qualify for the Meet of Champions. Jake was ninth in the boys race (17:15.87) and Abby was tenth in the girls race (20:45.22). The top 10 go.

With the help of AI, Jake learned they are only the second brother-sister combination since 1986 to qualify for MOC in the same year. Chris and Cate DeSousa, running for Christian Brothers and Red Bank Catholic, respectively, in 2019 are the only others to do. There have been seven sets of siblings since 1986 making it in the same year, but they’ve all been sisters or brothers.

“It’s crazy to think about,” Jake said. “To be able to have the opportunity to be able to compete at states together, but to not only capitalize on that and cement ourselves as one of two brother-sister duos going to the Meet of Champions the same year – and the only ones to go to the same school – is phenomenal. It’s something I will never forget.”

Woodstown boys fourth in Tri-County XC Showcase, girls fifth; Wolverines’ Abby Marino finishes third in girls race; also includes tennis results

By Riverview Sports News

SEABROOK — The Woodstown boys by all accounts ran well in Wednesday’s Tri-County Conference Cross Country Showcase, just not well enough to overthrow the loaded field.

The Wolverines, the Salem County champions, put three runners in the top 20 and finished an expected fourth in the race at Cumberland Regional. They had the third-fastest team average in the field.

Jacob Marino led the Wolverines across the line with a 10th-place 16:35.47. Karson Chew finished 13th and David Farrell was 18th. The top 20 finishers received medals.

“I think we landed right where I expected,” Woodstown coach Steve New said. “We could have maybe done a little better, but sectionals is what matters.”

Woodstown’s girls finished fifth, with Abby Marino running third (19:41.62), the highest individual finish among all Salem County runners. Teammate Anabel Schaal was 17th.

Glassboro, with three of the top four finishers, won the boys title. Delsea won the girls crown.

Passaic Tech sweeps boys, girls titles in state tech school cross country championships

By Al Muskewitz
Riverview Sports News

WOODSTOWN — The Passaic Tech cross country team is finally at full strength and has been taking it out on race trails across North Jersey ever since.

Bulldogs coach Shadi Taha knew he had “something special” brewing this year, but it took a while before he was finally able to turn it loose.

The season started slow with several runners on the mend, including junior ace Mike DeCarlo, but the group he expected to have has been together now for about three weeks and they haven’t been beaten yet.

The Bulldogs made it four races in a row Monday when they won the NJTAC tech schools’ state championship in dominating fashion at windy Salem Tech.

Passaic won the girls team title too, giving the Bulldogs their first sweep since 2015, the last time available records show the girls won it.

DeCarlo won the boys race in 16:43.03. Sussex Tech’s Micah Delelio won the girls race in 19:56.88 after finishing second each of the last two years to Morris Tech’s Maya VanHorn.Passaic and GCIT finished 1-2 in both team races.

The Bulldogs’ boys, the defending race champs, put the first three runners across the line — DeCarlo, Jayell Pallero and Victor Mielnik — all five of their counters in the top nine and seven in the first 13. The girls had two runners in the top five and then places 10, 11 and 12.

DeCarlo didn’t get out as fast as he expected into a stiff wind, but he led wire to wire for his third win. He won by more than 30 seconds.

“It wasn’t my best performance today, but I feel like I bounced back from last year,” he said.

Delelio wasn’t the pacesetter coming out of the gate in her race, but she took the lead as the field made its way through the woods and kept it the rest of the way. She was nearly 45 seconds ahead of GCIT runner-up Jordan Moczydlowski.

Wolverines show out

Woodstown, Marino win South Jersey Open division titles, team posts fastest average among all teams at the event

LOGAN TOWNSHIP – Woodstown scored one of the most significant victories in the history of its boys cross country program Saturday when it won its division in the South Jersey Open at DREAM Park. But a very real case could be made that the Wolverines won the entire day as well.

Led by Salem County champion Jacob Marino’s photo-finish win in the individual race, the Wolverines placed four of their five counters in the top 10 and all five in the top 15 to edge Haddon Twp. by nine points for the Division I team title.

Additionally, the collective effort of their five counters – Marino, No. 4 Karson Chew, No. 6 David Farrell, No. 9 Pacey Hutton and No. 15 Torsten Duva – produced a team average of 16:44 that was best among all teams in all divisions at the meet.

“I didn’t think we did it to be honest with you from looking at it,” Wolverines coach Steve New said. “I’m horrible when I’m watching racing with numbers and stuff because I get too emotionally invested in it while I watch.

“People are like I think we got them. I had no idea. I didn’t know what place anybody was in, I just knew they looked good. They’re just a tough group of kids who push each other.”

It was the Wolverines’ first win in the event. Their best finish previously was fourth in 2018. Nearly every runner they put in Saturday’s race ran a personal best in perfect weather conditions for good times, some by significant margins.

“We were underrated and we showed out,” Marino said.

“It was really good showing by our entire team,” added Chew. “Everybody did their part. It was a really good race.”

Marino won the race in 16:06.27, just one second off the school record he’s been chasing and nearly three-tenths of a second ahead ofrunner-up Shaun Maloney of Haddon Twp. (16:06.56). He’s the first boys winner from Salem County since Pennsville’s Dan Wyshinski in 2019. Schalick’s Jordan Hadfield won the girls race in 2023.

Marino led most of the race out of the gate. Maloney made a “serious” move late to take the lead with about 800 meters left, but as Chew described it, Marino “really gutted it out to finish first.” The Woodstown senior closed a 60-meter gap over the last 500 to nip the Haddon Twp. senior at the wire.

“It was so exciting coming across that finish line,” Marino said. “He was right ahead me after I led the whole race so I knew I wanted to catch him. It was a photo finish, one I definitely want to replay.

“Usually I’m not one that has that big kick, but I just turned it on today. There was no real lean or anything (at the finish), I just got him with pure speed at the finish. Really picked it up the last five meters just to try to get him. I knew he was on the same team we were trying to beat and I just knew I had to catch him to be able to get our team a big win.”

Marino’s sister Abby, the Salem County girls champion, finished second in the Division I girls race, posting a 19:28.78. Anabel Schaal was eighth overall (20:55.55) and fifth among team counters. Maple Shade’s Juliana Catalani won the race in 19:19.49.

The Wolverines finished fourth as a team.

Schalick finished fifth in the team race. Chase Riley was the Cougars’ fastest runner, placing 20th overall (17:32.46). Collin Bittle was 23rd (17:34.82) and Salvatore Longo was 24th (17:40.24). The Cougars won it in 2023.

The Cougars’ girls team finished sixth. Helen Lillia was 13th overall (21:47.57), ninth among team counters.

Sibling sweep

Jacob and Abby Marino give Woodstown unique brother-sister sweep in Salem County Cross Country Championships; Woodstown boys, Schalick girls win team crowns

PITTSGROVE — Jacob and Abby Marino were sitting in the living room Tuesday night talking with their mom about how special it would be for brother and sister to win their respective races in the Salem County Cross Country Championships the next day. The conversation was light and hopeful.

It would be their last chance to pull it off and their best chance of happening — one, because Jacob is a senior and was making his last stand and, two, because there’s a changing of the guard on the girls side of the race.

They talked about it Tuesday. Less than 24 hours later the siblings were high-fiving after pulling it off.

Jacob won the boys race with a PR 16:37 after some trouble in Turn One. Sophomore sister Abby completed the gold-medal family portrait, winning with in 19:59 with plenty of room to spare.

“It’s awesome that we’re able to do this together, (in) my last county race, senior year,” said Jacob, who followed his sister to the finish from along the boundary. “It’s great that we’re able to win Salem Counties together my last year. It’s not something that gets to happen all the time, you know. It’s a big opportunity to finish together with your sibling in first place at a meet as big as the county meet.”

“It really means a lot to me,” Abby said. “It makes me really happy to see us both do it together. He always supports me every single race and I support him every single race.”

Jacob couldn’t recall the siblings ever winning race together although they have matched places “a lot.” They’re also believed to be the first brother-sister combo to win the county.

“Coming into this year we knew there was that chance and we wanted to build on that and win together,” Jacob said after his race. “That would be really cool as a family to both win counties.

“That was our goal for today. Obviously, we have a very strong bond as siblings, so we wanted to build on that.”

Abby led her race wire-to-wire and hit the tape more than a minute and a half ahead of second-place teammate Anabel Schaal. Jacob’s race had a bit more drama.

He and teammate Karson Chew were well in front of the pack running shoulder-to-shoulder through the first 1,000 yards, but when they turned behind the football stadium Chew came in too tight and hit the chain-link fence’s corner support post with his right arm and it knocked him off the pace.

Marino heard the impact of the collision, and as much as he felt for his friend, he had a race to run and focused on pulling away to avoid being caught by one of the defending race champion’s renowned closing kicks. Chew closed the gap a little, but Marino won the race by 21 seconds.

“That’s the most idiotic way for me to go out in the race,” Chew said. “I keep thinking to myself that’s something that would only happen to me. I would be the only person who would do that.

“I knew we were going to slingshot out of that turn, so I was trying to stick the inside as much as I could and I didn’t have peripheral vision. I turned in and the pole was there. I never thought I’d be going fast enough to not see something.”

Woodstown won the boys team title. Schalick edged Woodstown for the girls crown.

The Woodstown boys flooded the top 15, going 1-2-3 and 7 through 12. Schalick filled in the three spots in between and finished second.

Schalick won the girls title by four points. The Cougars placed all five of their counters in the top 10, with Helen Lillia and Emma Cain’s PR coming in behind Marino and Schaal. They led by a point after the first five counters were scored, then slammed the door with 6, 7 and 8.

Woodstown closed the gap with its fourth runner, but two more Schalick runners were among the traffic that helped keep the final Wolverines counter from making up enough of the difference.

Schalick coach Missy Pine couldn’t tell her runners they had won the meet as they were calculating the scores, but she didn’t have to. They knew it when they saw their coach crying on the side.

“We weren’t expecting it; this one surprised me,” Pine said. “I set goals for the girls and we went over them right before the race and they just went out and achieved above and beyond. They pushed the hardest that we could and were just amazing. So many personal bests today. They’ve been working really hard and I’m glad it was able to see pay off for them.”

Woodstown’s Jacob Marino (R) comforts teammate Karson Chew after they finished 1-2 in the boys race. They went stride-for-stride for the first 1,000 yards until Chew hit a fence post making a tight turn and fell off the pace.
