New No. 1?

Salem CC uses late run to pull away from Brookdale, potentially lay claim to No. 1 after defending national champs lose by 30

By Al Muskewitz
Riverview Sports News

CARNEYS POINT – The Salem CC men used a late run to pull away from a close game and take down Brookdale 83-67 Saturday to remain undefeated and possibly lay claim to the No. 1 ranking in the country.

The Mighty Oaks went into the weekend ranked second in JUCO Division III and won while No. 1 Mohawk Valley lost by 30 to Orange County CC (Division II No. 14). If the Hawks remained in the top spot just because they were the defending D-III national champions and hadn’t yet lost, the setback should open the door for a change.

The new rankings come out Monday. Mohawk Valley had received all nine first-place votes in every one of the six weekly polls this season.

“I don’t know what level Orange is, but I heard they beat them pretty good,” Green said. “In the normal way of thinking things, No. 2 becomes No. 1. I don’t know if we did anything wrong to anybody. I think they’ll get a vote, but that’s how it normally goes, so we’ll see. It’s out of our hands. We just have to keep winning basketball games.”

If the Mighty Oaks (14-0) do become the new No. 1, it would have taken Green just 66 games to take the program from three games under .500 when he took over to the top of the division.

“That’s super cool,” Green said. “When I got here we were in the basement. That’s a testament to everybody who’s been a part of it.

“I’ll tell you one thing, if we’re deserving of it, they’d better give it to us because you’re going to turn these kids into something. They’re already playing with a chip on their shoulder, you’re really going to see some monsters. They’d better get it right because you don’t want to upset these kids.”

The Mighty Oaks had their hands full reeling in the Jersey Blues for most of their final home game of the calendar year. A 3-pointer by Kyle Fulcher cut their lead to 30-28 with 4:09 to play, then the Mighty Oaks closed out the half on a 13-4 run to take a 43-32 lead at the break.

Saaid Lee got it started with a layup and 3-pointer and had eight points in the run. Nasseem Wright had a pair of layups around a Brookdale free throw and Qua Smith had a free throw.

But they couldn’t shake the Blues. Brookdale got within four twice in the second half, the last time with 8:58 to play, but Salem went on a 22-6 run over the next seven minutes to put the game away.

It started with a pair of three-point plays by Idris Rines and Lee – both on assists from Jarrell Little – and just continued to grow. Rines had seven points in the run, Wright and Lee five each, Little two and Zyaire Gibson had a 3.

“We had a couple chances of blowing the game away, but they have championship DNA so they didn’t just fall that easily,” Green said. “Idris played really well, We played through Idris a little bit when the game slowed down and he delivered.  He’s almost there, he’s almost showing everything we envisioned. Once he puts it all together we’re going to be a completely different team.”

Wright led the Mighty Oaks with 26 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Lee had 22 points, five rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. Rines had 10 points and four rebounds. Gibson had nine points and 10 boards. The Blues took Little away, but he still finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Mighty Oaks and Northampton (12-0) are the last remaining undefeated teams in all of Region XIX. They meet for the only time in the regular season Jan. 15 in Bethlehem.

Salem CC women pick up their first win of season, 57-44 over Lackawanna

By Al Muskewitz
Riverview Sports News

CARNEYS POINT – The Salem CC women got to play their game, used two big runs in the middle two quarters to take control and won their first game of the season, 57-44 over Lackawanna Saturday.

After the teams played to a 9-9 draw in the first quarter, the Mighty Oaks outscored their visitors 22-11 in the second quarter and 22-12 in the third to take control.

“We’re excited to finally get that win,” Salem coach Brian Marsh said. “We have been close, but haven’t been able to get over the hump.

“We are finally getting healthy and being at full strength. We will enjoy the win today, but we have to get right back to work against Catonsville on the road Monday.”

Tanijya Shaw led Salem with 22 points, but suffered an apparent left leg injury late in the fourth quarter. The Mighty Oaks really made their hay on the boards, grabbing 64 rebounds with Paula Hunter pulling down 17, Justine Cardona grabbing 11 and Kasey Oliver snaring 10. Cardona also had four assists and three steals.

“TJ had a great game attacking the basket and playing tough D up top,” Marsh said. “I thought we did a much better job rebounding the ball and only giving them one possession, for the most part.

The teams swapped the lead several times early in the second quarter. Lackawanna led 15-14 with 6:57 left in the half, then Salem went on a 12-1 run over the next five minutes to build a 31-20 halftime lead. Shaw had four points in the run, including a layup with 5:30 left that put the Mighty Oaks up for good.

The Falcons closed to within 35-30 with 6:53 left in the third quarter, then the Mighty Oaks went on an 18-2 run to the end of the quarter. Shaw had eight points in the run.

No. 2 Salem CC makes it 13 in a row with another 100-point effort in win at RCSJ-Cumberland; overtakes GSAC lead with Union’s loss

By Al Muskewitz
Riverview Sports News

VINELAND – Last year’s Salem CC offensive production on the basketball floor was good enough to get them a record-smashing season and a fifth-place finish in the national tournament. Don’t look now, but this year’s version is looking even stronger, with younger players and a lot more players who can handle the ball.

The Mighty Oaks have been challenging the limits of scoreboards all over the region this year. Thursday night they hit the 100-point mark for the sixth time this season and second game in a row in blasting an improved RCSJ-Cumberland team, 106-78.

With their 13-0 start, the second-ranked Mighty Oaks are already halfway to last year’s win total. They hit the 100 mark five times in 34 games last year, they’ve already surpassed that this year and it’s not even Christmas.

“A hundred points definitely feels good,” guard Zyaire Gibson said. “We’re trying to see how many times we can do it, and we try to do it as many times as we can over and over and over until somebody stops us from doing it. The team that stops us from (doing it) we’re going to figure out what we did wrong and we’re going to (get it going) again.”

Last year, the Mighty Oaks finished 15th nationally in scoring (84.4) in an offense that basically ran through three players. With only one player back from that squad, going into Thursday night they were fourth in scoring (93.2), seventh in total points and in the top 10 in field goal percentage, 3-pointers made, 3-point shooting and the number that impresses coach Mike Green most during this run, assists.

Everybody who played in the game for Salem scored, including deep reserve Michael Goodwin, whose bucket at the rim late in the second half pushed the Mighty Oaks over the 100-point threshold.

They’ve hit triple digits this year against Bergen (102), Ocean (113), Passaic (111), Essex (109), RCSJ-Gloucester (100) and the Dukes. After Thursday night, their scoring average rose to 94.2 ppg and their average margin of victory is 20.3 points.

“It means you’re sharing the ball,” Green said. “You don’t score 100 points by going one on one (and) just not caring about your teammates. It shows this team cares about each other; we’re sharing the ball. I don’t know how many assists (tonight), but I’m sure it’s another 20-plus game.

“These guys are picking up what the coaches are putting down and it shows on the court. I’ve said it before: There’s something special about them. They have a certain specialness, a certain toughness, about them. That’s special.”

For the record, the Mighty Oaks had a season-high 25 assists (for 37 baskets), and that doesn’t count “coach’s assists” where guys get fouled going to the bucket without the shot falling and collect from the free throw line. Saaid Lee would have had at least 11 assists (and another points-assists double-double) if you counted those. They’ve had 20 or more assists seven times this season and 21 times in Green’s 65 games as coach.

The Mighty Oaks scored the first eight points of the game and never trailed. The Dukes (5-5) got as close as three with seven minutes left in the first half, then Salem scored the next 10 in a row on the way to a 16-point halftime lead.

Nasseem Wright led Salem with 26 points, six assists and three blocked shots. Jarrell Little, who leads Region XIX in total points, had 24 points, eight rebounds and five steals, and Lee had 14 points, eight assists and six steals. Stefan Phillips and Jaiayre Wright had nine points apiece. Gibson and Idris Rines each had eight.

“It’s good to play in an offense like that,” Little said. “There’s a lot of freelance. You can really play your game in this offense.”

“It’s way better than high school,” added Jaiayre Wright. “It’s fast-paced, everybody gets open shots, nobody is selfish on this team. I just like it. It’s real nice.”

The Dukes got 66 points out of their three big scorers – Vance Brown (28), Jamaal Davis (21) and reigning Region XIX and national Player of the Week Jameel Purnell (17) – but only 12 from the rest of the roster.

The Dukes were the first team Green faced after he got the Mighty Oaks’ coaching job right before Christmas in 2023. His daughter M’ersen was born Dec. 11 and he got the job 12 days later. They have celebrated 48 wins together, a .738 winning percentage.

No. 2 Salem CC shakes slow start, erupts for 100 points and 12th straight win; women’s game canceled

By Al Muskewitz
Riverview Sports News

CARNEYS POINT – The way this Salem CC basketball team has been going this season even with a disjointed start you got the sense once the first shot fell through the points were just going to keep coming.

But they had to get the first one and the way it started it didn’t look like either team would.

The Mighty Oaks didn’t score in the first five minutes of the game Tuesday night, but they racked up 100 over the next 34 minutes and put away RCSJ-Gloucester 100-72 to remain undefeated and pull into a share of the Region XIX Division III lead with fourth-ranked Union.

“We just had to see the ball go in the hoop,” said freshman Idris Rines, one of a season-high seven Mighty Oaks scorers in double figures. “Defensively, we held a team to zero points, so it’s not like we were asleep or anything. We couldn’t get shots to fall. We settled for a lot of 3s, weren’t getting to the rim or anything. Once we’d seen finally a layup go through everybody just seen the ball go through the hoop the rest of the game.”

“I knew once we made one shot we were going to keep hitting and going on our runs,” added point guard Saaid Lee.

Neither team could put the ball in the basket early and it was scoreless through the first four minutes of play.

The Roadrunners (4-7) finally scored on a putback 4:15 into the game and went up 4-0. Qua Smith finally broke the ice for second-ranked Salem with 14:50 left in the half and the bucket jumpstarted a 19-0 run that gave the Mighty Oaks (12-0) control of the game.

The Mighty Oaks got to the gym late and it took them a bit to settle in. They opened the game with 11 empty possessions, going 0-for-8 with five turnovers. But they still played good defense, forcing the Roadrunners to go 0-for-3 with six turnovers before somebody scored.

“We were supposed to be here 5:45, guys got here like 6; basketball gods aren’t going to reward that, so that’s probably why we started off so slow,” Lee said. “We just had a lot of brain farts and had to wake up.”

Head coach Mike Green put it a little more delicately.

“We missed shots; shots we normally make, we missed,” he said. “You see a zone and you automatically think shoot 3, 3, 3. We started working the ball. We started getting in the paint, getting finishes, and we took off from there. They picked it up. They listened to what we said and got going.”

Once the Mighty Oaks scored, they never stopped. They scored on eight of their next possessions, going 7-of-11 from the field capped by their first 3-pointer of the game from Zyaire Gibson. And they continued playing strong defense, holding the Roadrunners to 2-of-12 shooting and 10 turnovers in the spree.

The Roadrunners gathered themselves during a timeout and clawed back to within five with 6:23 left in the half, but then the Mighty Oaks put together a 15-4 run to eventually build an 18-point halftime lead.

All five starters scored in double figures for the third time this season, and then some. They got 36 points off the bench. Nasseem Wright was their leading scorer and rebounder with 18 points and eight, respectively.

Lee enjoyed his first double-double on any level with 11 points and 10 assists, easily winning a playful bet he made with someone in a Hawaiian shirt in the stands that he’d get seven assists in the game. Four of his five assists in the second half produced 3-pointers. He also had five steals.

“I just try to be good at my role, create for my teammates, play fast, defend the ball, all that,” Lee said.

Rines came off the bench with 15 points and seven rebounds. Stefan Phillips scored all 10 of his points in the second half and didn’t miss a shot. Jarrell Little had 14 points while Gibson and reserve Jaiayre Wright each had 11.

“Everybody does their role,” Rines said. “Some teams play five or six dudes that are really good (players), but we have 11 people who can go, get out, run. Everybody fills their role. For me, specifically, tonight, I was trying to get up the floor, get open shots, not force anything, and do what everybody needed.”

Despite missing so many shots early, the Mighty Oaks still wound up shooting 50 percent from the field for the game.

Ace Lassiter led the Roadrunners with 14 points. Freshman Jabez DeJesus, a senior at Salem High two years ago, scored his team’s last five points of the first half and finished with a collegiate career-high 11. He had scored 10 points total in six previous appearances.

Salem County teams split into two divisions in the new West Jersey Football League alignment; Woodstown, Penns Grove out of Diamond for first time in league history

By Al Muskewitz
Riverview Sports News

The Diamond Division of the West Jersey Football League may look a lot different than it has in the past, but it appears just as strong as it’s ever been.

The ”SEC West” of Group I football is still no country for old men.

Two-time reigning state champion Glassboro may be gone in the latest two-year shakeup of WJFL division alignments, but there is still a lineup of heavy hitters residing there.

Glassboro, Woodbury, Woodstown and Penns Grove may be out, but Pennsville, Paulsboro, Gloucester and Overbrook are in. All six teams in the new iteration of the division were playoff teams this past season.

Schalick was 5-7, but played in the sectional title game for the third year in a row. Pennsville (5-5, Patriot) was a South Jersey Group I quarterfinalist and Salem (6-5) and Paulsboro (9-2) played in the semifinals. Incoming Gloucester (5-5, Continental) and Overbrook (6-4, Patriot) were playoff teams in Group II.

“We feel like our division will be challenging, but we must challenge ourselves to get better,” Pennsville athletics director Jamy Thomas said. “We are familiar with the teams in our division and we are getting back a few Salem County rivals.”

To accommodate the shuffle, Salem County’s other two football-playing teams, Woodstown (3-7) and Penns Grove (0-9), were moved into the Independence Division with Buena (3-5), Clayton (5-5), Pitman (4-6) and Woodbury (3-7). Only Woodbury in this group made the playoffs this year, and it was involved in the fight with Paulsboro late in the game.

Glassboro jumps into the Colonial Division with Cedar Creek, Delsea, Holy Spirit, Ocean City and Pleasantville. Reigning Patriot Division champion West Deptford jumps into the Constitution Division with Burlington City, Delran, Haddonfield, Seneca and Willingboro.

Teams had the right to appeal their spots. Deadline for the appeals was Dec. 3; sources said there were more than 20. Five have been granted of the 11 heard, and while there will be changes in the alignment league officials declined to identify them.

“The modifications based on appeals granted have not been completed yet,” WJFL president and Moorestown athletics director Joe McColgan said Wednesday.

The group meets again Monday. “I’m hoping we’ll have some resolution” at that time, McColgan said.

Woodstown and Penns Grove have been part of the Diamond Division since the inception of the WJFL in 2010, but it has been rare that all five Salem County teams played in the same division.

The Eagles play an annual trophy game with Penns Grove. The last time they played all four of the other Salem County teams in the same season was 2019.

“(It) would be nice if the scheduling committee added Woodstown as one of our cross-overs so we would once again play all of the Salem County schools during the regular season,” Thomas said.

Hall of Famer

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder and Eastern Regional grad Davis Schneider inducted into the All-Sports Museum of Southern New Jersey Hall of Fame

By Riverview Sports News

BRIDGETON — Five weeks removed from hitting a leadoff home run in Game 5 of the World Series, South Jersey native Davis Schneider can call himself a Hall of Fame.

On Saturday, the Toronto Blue Jays outfielder and Eastern Regional grad was inducted into the All-Sports Museum and Hall of Fame of Southern Jersey.

Baseball fans will remember Schneider hitting the first pitch he saw from Dodgers’ starter Blake Snell for a homer to open Game 5, a game the Blue Jays won to take a 3-2 lead in the series. It was one of many big moments in one of the most memorable World Series of all time. The Dodgers won it in seven games, taking Game 7 in 11 innings.

But, then, Schneider has a penchant for hitting memorable homers. In his first at bat in the big leagues he sent one over one of the most famous walls in baseball, the Green Monster in Fenway Park.

Schneider talked about the World Series homer, the Series and his South Jersey roots during his induction speech.

“He was awesome,” Hall board member Anthony D’Agostino said. “He was phenomenal.”

Schneider set his sights on becoming a major leaguer at a very young age. As a high schooler, he helped Eastern win the 2014 South Jersey Group IV title as well as the 2016 Diamond Classic. He hit .439 as a junior and .441 with five homers and 40 RBIs as a senior.

The Blue Jays drafted him in the 28th round out of high school and he jumped at the chance forgoing an offer to play at Rutgers. He spent six years in the minor before making his big-league debut with a bang in 2023.

In 35 games that year he hit .276 with eight homers, 20 RBIs and a 1.008 OPS. He hit .191 with 13 homers in 397 at bats in 2004 and 11 homers in 199 at bats this past season after being recalled from AAA Buffalo on June 1.

It’s customary for inductees to donate items to the Hall. Schneider left the shrine a glove, a pair of cleats and two hats, one of which he wore when the Blue Jays won the American League pennant.

The museum, laid out in a five-room white bungalow across the street from Alden Field, houses more than 15,000 artifacts, photos and films from across the sporting spectrum with some connection to the state’s eight southern-most counties. The museum is open with free admission from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Saturday or by appointment.

No. 2 Mighty Oaks stay undefeated, women remain winless

By Riverview Sports News

PARAMUS – Team after team this season have threatened Salem CC’s status as one of the nation’s undefeated men’s basketball teams and time after time the Mighty Oaks have stood up to the challenge.

Bergen CC was the latest take a run at Salem, but after tying the game twice early in the second half, the second-ranked Mighty Oaks went back up by 12 and stayed comfortably ahead the rest of the night en route to a 90-78 win that ran their record to 11-0.

The Bulldogs had the game tied at 48 five minutes into the second half and at 52 with 13:45 to play, but the Mighty Oaks hit a 3-pointer and dropped in a layup off a steal and pulled away.

“We are getting teams’ best shots,” Mighty Oaks coach Mike Green said.

Jarrell Little had another big game offensively, leading the Mighty Oaks with 29 points and hitting five 3-pointers. In the four games this week, Saturday to Saturday, Little scored 112 points and hit 20 3-pointers. He is averaging 20.9 ppg for the season.

Wright had 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Saaid Lee had 13 points and Qua Smith had 11 points.

“Jarrell is the hot hand right now and our guys are doing a great job of finding (him) while still being offensive threats,” Green said.
